I usually like movies that have depressing or weird endings, but I'm glad this one ended up happy. It showed that a messed up girl really can turn things around and become responsible and Carlos was a good guy so I would hate to see him die in the end.

Nicole is a destructive and rebelious child [] Carlos is [an] organized [] gentlemen and meets Nicole which changes his life and attitude toward his friends and even his mother. He was becoming a rebel just like Nicole
Disagree. He was distracted by his new relationship (who hasn't been there?!), feeling frustrated by a couple of incidents, and had a couple of slips in discipline. Nothing serious at all (and certainly not "just like Nicole").
Nicole on the other hand, once she met Carlos, calmed
      w-a-a-a-a-y
down. When her father told him all about her behaviour it came as a shock to him, he had not seen any of that.
So in fact I believe that he always was the steadying influence she always needed, but it took the party / police incident and their running away together to make them both realise it. But having done so they realised "in the cold light of morning" as it were, that they had to face their situation and deal with it. Which they did, blah blah blah, happily ever after, yada yada yada, what's wrong with a happy ending. I liked it.

Great metaphoric observation: "in the cold light of morning"
I didn't pick that up while watching the movie, and it's so true.
        thanks!

I'm in the middle on this one. Carlos dying would have been an awful ending. Nicole killing herself would have also been awful. However, I did feel like the ending was way too sappy. The girl was clearly messed up and not just a spoiled rich girl, she should have been sent to some kind of clinic, maybe not in Utah, but somewhere nearby in Los Angeles where her father and Carlos could have seen her regularly. She did seem like she was determined at the end to be a better person.

Um, if I rememeber correctly her mother did NOT commit suicide, but resides in Virgina where she has remarried a Dermatologist who is home from work every night by 6, unlike her Dad who was working and politicking 24/7. (that's almost word for word how she describes it to carlos, on her bed in her room) He mentions that his dad left when he was 5, couldn't cut it in the US so he headed back to Mexico.

Later in the filmn, her father tells Carlos that Nicole's mother killed herself and Nicole saw her lying in the bed. Nicole also mentions seeing her mother and believing her to be asleep and in bed all day.

Her mother killed herself, were you not paying attention when her father gave the whole speach to Carlos too stay away from her. Then again at the end when she starts to decide to change she tells Carlos the "real" way her mother died, she was a suicide.

I actually don't think a dark ending is appropriate.. though I think the ending was a bit rushed. Probably they wanted to shot a happy ending.
I guess it's a good thing Disney modified the ending though I prefer a hanging end.
                  Something for the spectators imagination.

The Disney ending is incomplete because it doesn't tackle the ugliness of Nicole's craziness. The movie, as it stands, implies that Carlos completes her perfectly. That without Carlos she becomes a wreck; and that with Carlos she is beautiful. Craziness is not so simple in reality.
Carlos has to give up something for the ending to worknot just pretend to like in the movie. He can either give up Nicole, who then kills herself. Just like her mom did when the senator distanced himself with his work. Or Carlos can give up becoming a pilot and betray the dreams of his mother/family.
The entire movie sets up the dilemma. The Disney ending is that love eventually fixes all. The real ending is that love comes with a price.

I completely agree. I am a Pilot myself and before I went abroad for nearly two years to get trained I had a relationship with a girl that was vaugely similar to the one in this movie albeit with a lot less of the drama.
Anyways like you said a point came where I really had to decide - the girl or the career. I chose the career although sometimes I still think of the girl even though it is a long time ago now and I hear she has since settled down with someone else.
So I think in this kind of situation you really can't have it both ways.but hay, it's a movie and I actually like how this one ends even though I know it is not really true to life.

This movie was a tearjerker without any of the main characters dying. It would have been over-the-top dramatic if either of them died, I think.

^^^^ I agree. The movie was already dark and depressing. The characters went through so much turmoil, I think they all deserved a happy ending.

but it's not 'dark and depressing' when everyone gets
                            everything
they want, in the end It's just bad times, for a short while, and we all have to deal with that There's nothing particularly desolate about it, it just isn't a fairytale.
If you're gonna include emotional disturbance as a theme, then follow it through and show people having to compromise a little, because of it.

Bingo 'krypzzo' - the movie wants to have its cake and eat it, so the resolution doesn't come at any cost, whatsoever. I don't see what the point is of giving us 90 minutes of obstacles and clashes, if you're gonna tie everything up with a neat little bow at the end. This idealism really annoyed me, because the movie had shown genuine promise, beforehand.

I think what the ending should have been was montage showing Nicole melting down over and over and Carlos walking off of his job each time (like he did when he was taking his exam and spaced out the appointment with her father) .. after the montage show Nicole pregnant living in a Trailer Park with 5 kids and Carlos flipping burgers with a tag line Love Conquers All
                                Roll credits..
That would sure fit the movie better..
