Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — John Q

I felt for the characters, I was rooting for John Q but the fact of the matter is you can't provide decent health care for everyone.

Its possible.. since its done in other countries..
Its just a matter of taxes.
Would you be willing to pay higher taxes to ensure nobody in your country is denied care when needed?
Obviously Americans wouldnt.. Its bizarre.. a people so proud of their country, so proud to be American but they could care less about their fellow countrymen.
You guys got fat while everybody starved on the street. Now its my turn

Its not as black and white as you would like to make it. First, America is substantially larger than countries where socialized medicine "works' bringing with it a larger amount of problems. Second, its not about not caring for your fellow countrymen. Sure in an idealistic way its a nice thought that everyone gets what they need in the same way that communism sounds good in theory it just doesn't work in real life. And no I would not be comfortable with the massive tax increase necessary for the imposition of socialized health care, its just contrary to a free market system that would make everyones life better. Not to say that the healthcare system is not broken but providing single payer government service drops everyone down to a floor rather than raising people to a ceiling.

Well I love the health care here in australia when compared to other countries, while it has its faults it does good. And yeah we are one of the highest taxed countries in the world but we get so much from it. I like our balance we have here, where we have a welfare system and health care system, as well as everyone is entitled to schooling to whatever level they wish.

americans make excuses and rationalize nonsense to cover up their prejudices. fact is we are a selfish and biased people. we've been conditioned to be a tribal people that flock to either one party or another and whatever the dogma our chosen party spouts we accept as our own ideas. and defend to the death. universal healthcare is a doable alternative to the ridiculous situation we have now but not in a country filled with people that have been conditioned to believe that it's not and that it's a negative.

This is a fact about the United States. 100% agree with this.
People can have free healthcare! There is no excuse! Because of the size of the country? Or the population? That is BS. It is doable. We need to completely fix the components of our taxes to serve more humanitarian needs. For starters, we could easily cut 50% of how much we spend on military and transfer it over to free healthcare and free education. We do not need to fund illegal wars, 800+ military bases outside our own country, drone strikes and the selling of military arms and foreign aid to terrorist organizations like Saudi Arabia and the Israeli government.

Our American system is a hybrid of private and public. We have doctors in the private sector who charge quite high amounts for their services, but yet government funds represent a good chunk of their annual income. This creates a manufactured price bubble in US healthcare, not unlike the housing bubble was. What I don't understand is those who defend our present US system do not realize its cutting edge nature is driven by a bubble, and all bubbles pop. Our doctors make more money than doctors in universal coverage systems because of this bubble. This bubble is what enables many of our heroic procedures that draw patients from all over the world when their systems fail to deliver. Without this price bubble driving the incentives, we wouldn't have as cutting edge medical technology.

America is also a more litigious society compared to other countries. Doctors (especially OB/Gyn's) have to pay very high premiums to cover their asses in the event they get sued for malpractice. So while they do make a lot, they are also paying a lot to cover their asses. When you get your EOB from your insurance carrier, the doc charges a fee, they are independent affiliates of the hospital but not employed by the hospital. They all typically have private offices (sometimes many). These offices have administrative costs that any business has. Rent, staff, water, heat, electric, etc. So when that EOB comes stating how much your doc charges for an office visit, that is not just lining the docs pocket.
Granted some docs make a crap ton of money (looking at you plastic surgeons) but generally Family Practice and Pediatricians aren't rolling in the dough. The more specialized your practice the more you made. Rightfully so, can you imagine being a cardiac doctor working on the lifeline of a persons body? Going in with sharp instruments and being relied upon to do it perfectly? Another one is a neurosurgeon. If the doc coughs or twitches they could seriously screw up a persons brain.

It can be done, but it is a big business for certain people as private and it is a big business for certain people as a public service.
                        But it can be done.

You can thank Big Liberal Government for employer based health care, rather than health insurance to be bought as everything else.
Back in during the great depression and WWII the U.S. National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), and nice liberal government expansion, they put wage freezes on companies. When companies were not "FREE" to pay what they wanted to pay their employees, they had to give them other benefits. Welcome to Employer based healthcare coverage.
In the 30s and 40s with, you guessed it, unions coming to the bargaining table, the employer based system expanded even more.
So now with employers paying for the majority of the coverage, more people go to the doctor when most times they would not go. This created the insurance premiums to rise. Also if employers did not have this added expense they could pay their employees more with salary, not health care. The rise in hospital prices are due largely because they know they are not billing individuals, they are billing the insurance.
In summary: A government agency took the rights away from a company to offer compensation to employees. Employers had to compensate by offering health insurance. Unions, took advantage and then the employer based system expanded big time.
Hospitals knowing they can charge insurance companies extraordinary amounts started to raise their charges.
Please thank FDR and the progressive agenda for the health care problems.
because Progressive actually means "progressively worse with time"
