I am very jealous of universal healthcare systems, and I fully support moving towards the very same sort of thing here in the United States of America.

Our taxes are high enough. The problem is that the more money the majority of the politicians and corporate executives here make, the more they want, and our system is used primarily to give them exactly that.

It's certainly not "free" healthcare. It gets paid for through taxes. I don't know about you, but my taxes are high enough as it is. I am completely, utterly, ant totally against nationalized healthcare - or nationalized anything, for that matter. It's a monopoly, and we have anti-trust legislation in the USA. National healthcare would be illegal anyway, so it's a moot point.

I agree, It is not free, It is paid for through taxes. But (I know nothing about the cost of health insurance in the USA so please bear with me on this) would you rather pay $500 to a health insurance company for them to turn around and say "You can't have that operation because your insurance plan doesnt cover it" or pay an extra $400 for national health care and be able to go to any hospital and not have the worry of wether the NEEDED operation will be covered or not.
You say that you are totally against "nationalized anything". That being the case must mean that you are against the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, IRS, FBI, CIA, DEA, FEMA, NASA, EPA, National Parks Service, Federal Penetentiary system, US Marshalls, Congress, Senate and the president of the USA. By your definition these are ALL NATIONALIZED organizations and therefore are ALL MONOPOLIES and so therefore in breach of US anti trust legislation and therefore illegal under US law.
If you want to argue that all of them are "public services operated by central govenment for the protection and welfare of the people" and so are NOT monopolies, then so be it. But given that fact, then any nationalized healthcare system operated by the central government would not be a monopoly governed by anti trust legislation, it would be a "public service operated by central govenment for the protection and welfare of the people"

The fact of the matter is that I don't think that we (the USA) could truly call ourselves the best country in the world, when we can't provide health care to all citizens- and so many countries can. It's a disgrace.
How could America EVER "truely" call itself the greatest country in the world? You think the messed up health care system is the only thing holding America back from being the greatest country in the world? HA! that's just the tip of the ice berg. Guns, treatment of blacks, presidents past and present, the most evil human beings that have ever walked the face of the earth (Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy, David Karesh, Ed Gein etc etc etc), wonderful role models (Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Pussy Cat Dolls, Fiddy Cent etc etc etc), created more chaos and wars all over the world than any other countries. I could go on forever. If America wasn't so blindly patriotic and didn't ignore everything that's wrong with them then people all over the world wouldn't hate America so much.

we can get hearth care that is free to a certian extent. the hospital can't deny you care. in realty all john q had to was try to get on the news. which is hard for a black man that hasn't shot anyone. he could have gotten dotaions or a loan maybe. or the hospotal would have made him pay it back. he could have went to the church and got some money form them.
however what is said about hmo's is true. they suck. they don't really care about most of there panients and lot of stuff ios done over the phone. plus we all pay way to much for meds. infact americans pay more money for meds then any other country in the world. but we do had some of the best hospitals for teaching. remember we are to county that took a guys index finger and put it where his thumbs should be. some how he lost both his thumbs. and plus we have unjoined conjoined twins, and the first contry to fix a defect in the human heart.

                          In reply to ats02171,
I'm sorry; were you watching the same movie I was? John DID try to get on the news; but got brushed off. He DID try to get donations; but no one would help him. He DID get money from the church. I don't think that many of us could raise $250,000 big ones (or even the 30% he was asked to pay to even get his son a place on the list.) if we tried half as hard as he did.
I mean no insult; I just wondered if you missed some of it.
                          That's it.

no i saw the whole movie. but was a while ago. yeah black people when going to to newz to get help on something they will get brused off. but at the same time think that he could have done more. and if all he had to get was 75,000 i think he could have gotten it somewhere. plus i don't think that is how it works. the hospital can not just say know. the age of the child and health of the child would come into play. and he was healthy even with the heart devicet and he has more potincal of surivablity.

It was a movie.relax.yes it is a poignant moviebut a moviedon't treat the movie tiself like it was real.
Nationalized Healthcare is a joke..Canadians wait in line for years for surgeries.they often cross the border for health care here..and it is tru he would not have been turned down if he needed the surgery.there are hospitals across America dedicated to children that require no payment..
Hospitals in general are required to provide emergency care..most hospitals will work payment plans and in most cases write off the bill if you truly can't make payments.
remember.the more government gives you.the more control they get..no it ain't some conspiracy theory its simple..if they pay for your healthcare.they can dictate where you go, etc.its just like everything else.
TO answer the orignal question..I'm not jealous of anything Canada has..

I lived in the USA for a couple of years, and when I returned I was so thankful we had the NHS. You take it for granted until it's not there for you! It's not a nice feeling, even for two years. It amazed me that such a rich country does not provide such a basic service free of charge! The very few times I did visit people in hospitals over there, I was shocked at how unsophisticated and basic it all was. Yes, there are huge expensive medical centres throughout the USA, mainly in the state capitals, but I think most are pretty small and basic.
Totally off subject, but what's the craic with the road surfaces in Detroit!? There were so many potholes it was like driving through a bloody warzone, I kid you not!! And this is the motorways/freeways I'm talking about 😮

Nobody in America should ever be jealous. This is the best country in the world, that's why everyone else is hates usthey are the jealous ones. There might be some better things going on in other countries, but overall America is the place to be. And, by the way, you said the movie was silly, but it is based on a true story so it can't really be called silly or unrealistic or any of that.

Only an American would say that the rest of the world hates you because their jealous. First of all, the world doesnt hate you, they hate your government. Secondly, few people that I know are jealous of Americans. I'm from Canada, and while most people respect that Americans have chosen different values to be entrenched in their society, they wouldn't want to be in the states. For one thing, any Canadian can walk into a hospital and get free health care. It may not be perfect health care, but the bottom line is that the Canadian government pays less per capita for health care than the American government and yields better results, not to mention that they manage to pay for universal health coverage. One more example: what kind of modernized, western country in the 21st century questions a woman's right to choose? If a serious politician ran in Canada stating that they would make abortion illegal, they would have no chance of winning. Even Steven Harper, who allot consider to the George Bush of Canada, had to state that he wouldn't reverse the decision protecting the right to abortion.
So, in other words, get over yourself. There's a reason that people in the world live in countries other than the US, many of them want to.

I'm an American born and raised, and I agree with everyone who says bad things about it. IT SUCKS. I myself have a chronic disease and only recently was I able to be put on a medication that I actually needed. And before then, the medications I was on were expencive, and my family didn't have any insurance. Did anyone help us? Goverment aid, insurence offers? No. Only when my mother was fired from her job did I get approved more Medicaid. Fat lot of good that did. Without a job, we have probably less money than we did when I didn't have insurance. My mom's not a citizen and the goverment lost her green card information. TWICE. So it is litteraly impossible for her to get a job. (For the record, I'm white, so don't say it's just the blacks that are treated poorly.)
And it's not only that makes me want to move to Canada. We start war, we kill people, and we are as much terrorist as al-Qaeda or the Taliban or even Osama bin Laden himself. We had no reason to go into Iraq, and the one reason we did is to get Saddam Hussein. Well, we captured him. Three years ago. And guess what? He's dead now. The only reason we are in Iraq is because it is plenty rich in oil. It's OIL that started this war. If other countries had OIL, we'd be there too. If Darfur had lots of OIL, we would probably be there, stopping the genocide. Almost two 2,000,000 people have died in Darfur. Because of genocide. THAT is a crime against humanity.
Though most of the Americans on this board probably have no idea what I'm talking about because, I, unlike more than half the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA's population (including our President), actually read books every once in a while. So let me keep it simple for you: WE (America) SUCK!
