Why the hell does this have a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes?

It was just too sappy, heart string pulling, and over the top. It tries to make you cry so hard, that at times it fails and comes off as cheesy.
The plot is interesting, and the acting is superb, but a 6/10 sounds about right. Certainly not 2/10, that's for movies that aren't even technically sound (editing, audio, continuity, etc)

Cheezy parts I'll admit - the ending, where mike goes 'Thank you' - I thought it was enough or I dunno. Something else should've been done differently. I can't figure out what else I find cheasy but I feel like this movie is at least a 7/10. Still hands down one of my most favorite movies.

The rating was at 82% before Eddie Griffin spitted out, "John, take care man. You my hero."
This. While I love Griffin, that line and the way he delivered was pretty bad. I'm not sure if it was intended to be comical but it took a bit away from the ending of the film. Could've been better than it was if Griffin's character had he was proud of him or something along those lines.
