So with Knives at the end…

That's my thinking too.
After all, Knives' only experience with humans was on the ship and being cruelly treated by (Kevin?). Being the arrogant narcissist that he was, he felt he was above mere humans and not liking them (because of the abuse thing), he decided he would wipe them all out.
I'm guessing Vash thinks that exposing Knives to real people as opposed to freakish minions, that Knives will have a change of heart. Or at least learn that humans aren't beneath his notice.
I often wondered what Vash would do if Knives didn't change his thinking and start behaving himself. Vash has already killed once - killed Legato to save not only Millie and Meryl but the townsfolk. Plus, he's thrown off the red coat and his clinging to the memory of Rem, so he may be more willing to take that step should it be unavoidable. And a Knives still bent on destroying humanity would make Vash's killing him unavoidable.

I don't wonder, Spooky-I'm pretty sure Vash is not only able to kill Knives, but he wouldn't hesitate if things got out of control. As you say, Knives didn't have very good experiences with humans. He was abused by that one crew member, and I don't think Rem was a very good role model for the boys either. The only stable adult on the ship seemed to be the captain, and he was so overwhelmed with the idea of being a parent that he didn't do much of a job with them. I think it's quite possible that Knives could reform. Maybe not to the extent of being able to be around humans for very long, but maybe he could learn to tolerate them and share the planet with them. And he does love Vash-odd as it seems, he does love his brother and Vash loves him. Maybe that love can make a difference, although I have to say the only long-term solution I could see is Vash and Knives withdrawing from the world and living their own lives in solitude, just coming out to help if some humans start to oppress other humans.

Yeah, that would be my hope for Knives at least.
Still I can't imagine Vash wanting to stay isolated, even if it was with Knives. He loves people too much and longs for their company. He was very unhappy when he had to wait for a year outside the crashed ship waiting for Knives. Even having his brother, Vash would get lonely. He only isolated himself when he feared his presence would present a danger to others.
But then, if it was to keep Knives and everyone else safe, I could see he'd do it, but he wouldn't be happy.

I could see a living situation developing where Knives and Vash would build a place to live and Knives would pretty much stay there and Vash would come and go. Maybe Knives would work on scientific endeavors to help the planet-he's really smart and I think he'd be happy to help improve the planet, as long as it wasn't emphasized that helping the planet would also be helping the humans. And I could see Vash coming and going, being available at all times to help humans out and traveling sometimes just to see what's doing in the outside world. If Vash and Knives joined forces like that, I could see them both being pretty happy.

You all need to go out and track down and buy all 16 volumes of Trigun. There are 2 volumes called Trigun, and then 14 volumes called Trigun Maximum.
The manga includes 2 villainous characters not shown in the anime, as well as tons more development for Knives, Rem, The Gun-Ho Guns, and Wolfwood.
There are entire plot arcs missing from the anime its not even funny. Trigun may be a great anime, but true fans must explore the manga for a better ending and a more complete experience. -

So you're going to come here, Jamasian, and tell us we're not true fans and then expect us to listen to your opinion?

Its the equivalent of watching the Hunger Games movies (in the future), and not reading the books.
They are different mediums and different from each other, but the books will probably be better.
As someone who has seen the Trigun anime and read the manga as well, the manga is quite a few notches higher due to having more time to develop the characters and deliver a grand plot which is cut from the anime. Also key characters that are really cool are simply left out and it feels like a lesser version of the story. -

You can love the film and not have read the book. And still be a fan.
Exactly, Unicorn. You know, Jamasian, the problem is that you're considering your subjective opinion as an objective fact. The manga is not "quite a few notches higher." That's your opinion of it, and you're welcome to your opinion, but it would be more polite to phrase it as an opinion, like "I think the manga is quite a few notches higher." To insist on your opinion being a fact and those of us who don't share it are not true fans is just obnoxious.

i agree with you. you don't have to read the manga and watch the anime, or vise versa to be a true fan. your a true fan because you enjoy it.
however
the manga does explain a lot of what the anime simply leaves out. i won't go into too much detail but knives and vash
have/had an older sister before they were borne.
what was explained in this story arc fudged with both vash and knives. vash recovered. knives did not. and unfortunately this is just one instance that was never shown in the anime.
The anime i think would have been easier to understand had of some of these left out arcs been included. 50 episodes would have been perfect. That being said, the anime is freaking amazing. I have yet to read the last book, since i have to order it online, but i have been told that it also explains what happened to knives after the big shoot out in episode 26.
it is simply fact that in
most
cases, of many anime or manga, the manga is produced at a much slower rate then the anime. This time difference leaves producers very little information, or just basic ideas, to go on as far as completing an anime. Which is why these gaps or differences in manga and anime happen.
for me to fully understand what had happened in the story i found it beneficial to read the manga, and it's worth it, the art and story fill in what the anime leaves behind for the fan. but you can still fully enjoy and appreciate the anime. the art is fantastic. The animation in many scenes was beyond amazing, but also there were many scenes which could have been better animated. Trigun badlands rumble i think is how the anime should have been presented in the first place. The animation in the OVA was grade a!
anyways i know that was a big post, but i hope it helps. sorry to get off topic -

Vash shot both his arms and his legs. He disabled Knives. Thus, the way I see it, Knives will be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He's no threat anymore. This way, Vash can work on reforming him without having to worry about anybody dying.

It's not a plot hole, it's that we can't solve the 'spider and butterfly' dilemma. You either shoot Knives in the head or you take the risk.
Knives wanted to shoot mankind in the head, that's the whole thing with their feud.
"Need" is a man-made concept. As is "should", "must", "value" and "importance".
