I liked Gantz. It had good characters, although once
Katou and the little dog died
, it was never the same. I think the last arch needed more than just one protagonist. I wanted to read the manga, but with 300+ chapters, nah, thanks.
I think Requiem for the Darkness is definitely not something I would like to see 100 episodes of ^_^ It is not a kind show I can say I e n j o y e d really, a few episodes proved quite disturbing, but it is an interesting oneas a whole. It has some flaws, like I never really cared for any of the characters, and the ending was kind of meh, I expected something more. I'd definitely say Ayakashi and its spioff Mononoke, which both belong to the same genre, history-spirits-horror type of, were excellent, and could do with more episodes.
Vampires are such a good topic for films/anime/books, I wonder why is it so hard to make something decent out of it. -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 18, 2010 05:39 PM)
I thought Gantz was good too. Hey the Dog had two of the best scenes with the girl though! lol
I haven't seen Requiem yet, but I think I can safely say that just because the main character is writing a book about 100 storiesDoesn't mean you have to have 100 episodes. Actually to me most of those long animes get lost within themselves. It is harder for me to get into them. So I agree. Although I guess I need to see it first =P
Vampires are great! However, when they make them love sick teenagers is when they go wrong. Not that is necessarily a bad thing. But it seems that is the only movies they put out. By the way Daybreakers I thought was horrible. 30 Days of Night was decent though. Hellsing has the best Vampire of all time in it! Next to D that is.
How do you make the spoilers box around the text you want to hide?

It took me a while to figure it out, but here it is:
http://www.imdb.com/help/boards/markup
Has all the useful stuff to edit the posts, including spoiler signs etc.
I just though it was so sad when the doggie died, not fair, since it could not even properly defent itself (bite a statue? ^_^ haha).
The longest series I have watched was FMA Brotherhood, with 64 eposides, and then the first FMA with 51 (and the reason why I started was that I didnt not know how long it would be). I dont like very long shows, like Bleach. Takes too much time and at one point you can not even remember how it all started. With requiem for the Darkness the problem is more that it feels not confortable enough to watch it for a long time.
Daybreakers, ugh. I thought it was ridiculous, although the idea was there. The beginning was not bad, but then, a lot of films start well, and then they turn bad. Vampire Hunter D is one show that proves how good a vampire theme can get, although I suppose if you want to make money you will replace D with a pale James Dean wannabe in an expensive car.

Thanks for the help! I just want to make sure no one's experience is ruined because the newbie doesn't know how to properly warn people about spoilers. I have had things ruined before on boards of this site. Now I just try not to go into a board until I am done watching something

I really did think it was sad when the Dog died. I am a huge dog lover! I know you didn't finish it. There was a later episode of Elfen Lied that you would have not liked that involved a puppy. I had to turn away.
I started to watch Bleach. I thought that was a decent show. I agree that sometimes they get lost within themselves when they run too long. The only long anime that I enjoy is Inu Yasha. I for some reason developed a fascination with it when I first got into anime. It just ended at almost 200 episodes, and four movies. Although I have not seen the ending of it.
So Requiem From the Darkness is disturbing then? Is it the violence, or the over all atmosphere?
Yes I was very disappointed with Daybreakers. I didn't think it was going to be a masterpiece going in. It just turned bad in a hurry. My favorite part of the whole movie was Willem Dafoe. He is a great actor. Just a horrible movie Ethan Hawk is a pretty good actor as well. I also like Sam Neil. The movie just didn't go anywhere I thought. The should make a live action Vampire Hunter D flick. The first movie you could have him kill Edward from Twilight. He could kill him in like the first 5 seconds of the moviemaybe 2 seconds hahah!

Unicorn_Blade — 15 years ago(July 20, 2010 02:50 AM)
Requiem for the Darkness was quite disturbing. Actually it gets lighter towards the end of the show, but two episodes from the middle literally made me feel sick. Also the atmosphere is very claustrophopic. And it did not help I was watching the show while having a high fever. Do not repeat my mistake
I think sometimes literal violence (like in Gantz, or Battle Royale) is easier to get over than incest, etc.
When I found out about Bleach it had already 120 episodes or so. I got DVDs from a friend with first few seasons, but then as I knew I will not get the other few dozens of them for myself, I did not even start. I dont like watching a show of which I know I will not not be able see the ending. Sometimes the characters grow on me, so id probably feel obliged to watch the whole thing.
I think the idea for the beginning of Daybreakers was not too bad, but it went horribly wrong. Like when they came up with the solution, I was like what the hell. Is that it? The whole explanation was just stupid. I thought it was a shame that with so many decent actors they just wasted an 1,5 hours of my life.
I think the problem with live action D film is the choice of the main actor. I can not see absolutely anyone who would be good in the role. But anyways, Edward Cullen would not be good enough to polish D's horse's hooves.

Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 20, 2010 05:45 PM)
I had watched the first episode not too long ago. I remember the show having a very murky creepy atmosphere. Yeah incest is pretty sick!
I know what you mean about long shows like Bleach. There is one kind of long one I am very interested in seeing. Have you heard of Monster? It is about a doctor that ignores what the hospital board tells him. They tell him not to save this young boy. He does it any ways. Which leads to them firing him. Turns out the boy is a sadistic killer. So the series focuses on the Doctor seeking the boy out to "fix" his mistake.I heard Viz did the dubbing, but canceled after 16 episodesI believe there is 74 total episodes
The whole solution for Daybreakers wasn't well thought out at all. Also the "jump" scares I didn't think were that impressive.I felt cheated too!
I am still racking my brains as to who could portray D.Can't find anyoneHave you heard about the Cowboy Bebop live action movie? They have Keanu Reeves playing SpikeI think I am going to be sick. I like Keanu, but He is too old for Spike. Spike is supposed to be around 28 or so. Not in his early 40's Plus I don't think Keanu has the acting chops to fulfill the role. Spike is just a cool guy.

Was Comboy Bebop also not supposed to have someone like Camron Diaz as Fay? They might have changed since the last time I was reading news about it, but it defintiely shows the director/producers have never seen the real thing. And they probably would not care anyways even if they did. I dont think Keanu is such a great actor, not that he is bad but he does not look right either. I think it is the general problem with live action films, I have not seen a single one that was decent (Blood the last vampire live action was probably the worst film of last year, or a runner up for the title in best case). First, there is the acting problem, then if you try to stuff 26 eposides on anime into a 90 minute film, there is bound to be shortcuts. I have seen the live action Deathnote and I thought that what they did to the script was a crime. Honestly, the writer should have gone to jail for butchering an otherwise smart show. But at least they did a decent job with casting BTW, Gantz in gonna be a live action as well, coming out next year! Actually, I am pretty excited about it.
With D it is even more difficult, because everywhere in the novels it says at least 100 times that D was so beautiful that even men were uneasy around him, but somehow that meakes a lot of people think that it means he was looking like a woman or something. And finding an actor that would be beautiful in everyones eyes is more lime mission impossible:)
Monster sounds really interesting! 74 episodes is still not that bad, and since the show is over there is not gonna be more, I could deal with that.
I usually do not watch the shows dubbed unleast I really really have too I dont know why, but the dub often really irritates me, I have not seen too many series/films where the dubbing would be even half as good as the original, Vampire Hunter D was an exception, maybe ebcause it was done first in English and the voice acting was just perfect -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 24, 2010 02:23 PM)
Cameron Diaz as Fay!??? Yuck! I mean I think she is a decent actress, but she is no Fay Valentine! Well instead of a movie I think they should keep an anime the way it was originally shown. In this case a 26 episode format! Plus one movie! They could film it as a mini series. Then they could keep the episodes intact! I mean they could even expand on them, and turn them from 20 minutes. To 40 minutes. Gantz live action sounds very interesting!
Yeah it would be hard to cast D for sure. Especially like you said. He is supposed to be extremely "beautiful".
Check out
www.animenewsnetwork.com/
For more details about Monster. I would really like to get into that series provided they release the whole thing on dvd.I also read that the translated the Monster manga scene for scene with the anime.
I prefer the dubs myself. However you are right sometimes the dubs are badBebop has one of the best dubs around. Baccano is fantastic! You need to check that show out as soon as you can! Take my word for it!
I just received Claymore in the mail today. I heard some people said it reminded them of Berserk. So I thought I would check it out.Let me know when you get Baccano! I think it is only $20 on amazon. That is where I bought it from.

Gantz might be an OK movie at least since the Japanese will do it. Their live actions dont suck as much as the American ones

I will check out Monster and Baccano! for sure once I finish Gungrave (Im more than halfway through!), I am also kind of interested in Eureka 7, Planetes and Mushishi, it used to have brilliant reviews, but I ended up only watch first to episodes, I might watch it again. Claymore is supposed to be good as well, I think I have in on DVD back at home. I actually have quite a few shows somewhere on my shelves, so I might use a part of remaining summer catching up:)
I think the problem with dubs is that very often they do not say the same thing as the original. I speak little Japanese, bur sometimes the difference I get is quite big. Like, in Japanese version they would use swear words while in the dub they would say "Oh my!":) And in most cases I actually find the original superior somehow, it matches the characters more. I remember watching GiTS SAC and I compared a few episodes with the dub one, i simply could not stand listening to the leads. They used a completely different manner of speaking, and that kind of changed my perception of the characters. Since they I stik to the original. It can add some new interesting thing to the interpretation of the character, but I really enjoy listening to Japanese, even though I dont get much, and reading subtitles.

Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 25, 2010 05:50 PM)
So how are you liking Gungrave? Well I have yet to see Monster.I am going to wait until they have the whole series available. If I were you I would recommend checking out Baccano first. There is only 16 episodes. I saw the dub first. Then tried watching it in Japanese. I couldn't stand that one in subsThe dub actors do the accents so amazingly well. Wait until you hear Ladd Russo, or Vino :). I warn you though. There are a lot of funny moments, but there is some very violent images. Of course not like Gantz, or the beginning of Elfen Lied. Shows someone get their face ripped off while having it drug on the ground from a train :O! Also the beginning can be confusing because they introduce like 18 "main" characters in the first episode. Then they keep showing flash backs, and forwards over a 3 year period. After a couple of episodes you get used to the pacing though. Actually the twist are A LOT more rewarding when viewing them that way

I really like it. And I love to see how the characters age as the times passes by, even slight differences if faces are visible, they put a lot of attention in such details. It is not the case in all shows, you sometimes get an anime that lasts quite a while and the characters look the same, except for f.ex. longer hair. This is what I did not particularly like about FMA Brotherhood, the characters were a lot less detailed than in the manga, and the faces would not change at all although you see some character's hostory over 10 years or even more. Also it is nice to see such well developped and complex characters. It is hard to put it off really:)
I just rewatched a few Gantz episodes and Requiem for the Darkness, so a ripped off face does not sound so scary at all:) -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 26, 2010 06:49 PM)
I am very glad that you are enjoying Gungrave so much! The first time I saw it I remembered how amazed I was by it. The same things you are describing about the aging I found fascinating as well. Like you said most series don't put much thought into that aspect. Brandon Heat, is just an amazing character. My favorite part of the series is right after he becomes The Sweeper. He is just such a bad ass :). At the same time though you just feel for the guy. I mean everything that he is doing to "Never betray the family". I won't give away any details, but I will say this. To me the whole series has this Shakespeare vibe to it(I think I said this once before). Some of the best characters in anime. It truely deserves top 10 spot. For me I would say it belongs in my top 5. What episode are you on?
I am on episode 8 of Claymore. I am really getting into it. I wouldn't say it is as good as Berserk, but I see where some people would say there are similarities to it. I need to wait until I see the end though before I write a full review. Right now we are at a flash back that is lasting 4 episodes now. I will keep you posted on my continuing thoughts, and ultimately final review. I think after this I am going to watch The Big O again
Or then again I need to watch Requiem since we keep talking about it lol. Well there are a couple of "freaky" parts to Baccano. Especially when they are talking about The Rail Tracer. Wow just thinking about it makes me want to watch it again just to see all of the things that I "missed" the first go around. Baccano is definitely in my top 5 now by the way. Which I think would look something like this.
Berserk
Baccano
Cowboy Bebop + Movie
Trigun + movie (even though I have yet to see the movie)
Gungrave
I really want to check out Mushishi btw.
Have a nice Day

Unicorn_Blade — 15 years ago(July 27, 2010 03:41 AM)
I think the reason that I did not continue Mushishi is that I was right after cr@ppy Jigoku Shoujo that has similar type of plot development (until the last 2 episodes there is no connection between the various ones, they are just stand alone stories). Mushshi, while much much better, seemed a bit similar in that respect, that you dont get to know much about the main character, you just see him traveling and helping out, and I was looking for something with a plot. And I choose Rahxephon, an epic fail:)
I think if I had to pick my top 5, difficult as it is, Id go for
Now and then, here and there
Texhnoylze
Cowboy Bebop
Vampire Hunter D (both movies) with Paprika ex equo
Fullmetal Alchemist (both series, but not the movie). I am kind of sentimental about it, it was the fist series I have seen, and it was 6 years ago I think. I have a soft spot for it.
Top 5 is definitely not enough! There are so many runners up. Like lots fo Ghibli stuff or Kino no Tabi, oe Neone Genesis Evangelion, and there is a number of series I really really enjoyed, but they were missing just this little bit of something. Hard to pick the fav 5. F.ex. I really love Gungrave, but it would be hard to kick out lets say Texhnolyze out of the list
I have difficulty replacing old favs with new favs. But it is an excellent show, so you never know what happens once Ill get to the end.
Im on episode 19 at the moment. And I cant say it is getting more and mroe interesting, since it has been like this from the very start. It defintiely has something from Shakespeare, and as for crime movies, probably it is one of the best from the genre. Althoug I had slight doubts after seeing
Bob's body turning into a giant helicopter

-
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 27, 2010 05:42 PM)
The reason I have been putting off Mushishi is that I haven't felt like engrossing myself in something of that pace latelyI have been more in an action mood as of late. I don't really like the idea that you don't learn much about the main character in it either. If that is the case there isn't really much plot. How does he feel about this? What drew him to traveling looking for the Mushishi?
You are rightTrying to name one's top five for anime is too difficult. Lets say compose a list of all of your favorite anime. I am referring to stuff that you wouldn't rank lower than a 8 out of 10. I need to see Texhnoylze now lol. When I placed Baccano in my top five. It was difficult lifting that above all of my other classics, but I just couldn't help it
So you are almost done thenI too was disappointed with with Bob's "evolution". The fight scene was pretty good, however I thought even for an anime. It just didn't fit in with the feel that the series had established. Just a little too much. One thing that seemed to transcend all of the craziness though is the characters. There is an upcoming episode called Duel I believe. All I will say is keep an eye out for that one. I am really enjoying Claymore even more than I thought. I just finished a four part flash back that really drew me into it. Now it seems as though we are back in "present" day on a 3 part story arc.

Unicorn_Blade — 15 years ago(July 28, 2010 11:20 AM)
With 2 more episodes to go, I am really getting excited, but also kind of sad that Gungrave will be over soon. I really love how they portray the characters. I mean, it is not uncommon for crime films to have characters that are niether black nor white, so you cant really say what you think of them.
On the one hand you kind of feel that Harry and co are wrong, but I still felt bad for Bear Walken, btw, did they ever say what happened to his wive?
. The fight with Bunji was quite impressive, as expected.
Out of all the transformations, I think Bunji's made most sense, then Lee's, although he kind of reminded me of crazy dentist from Speed Grapher. I found Bear's floating fists quite strange as well
So now Im saving the last episodes for the next few days.
Apart from the anime I mentioned, I gave an excellent ranking to Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trigun, Mononoke hime and Porco Rosso, Paranoia Agent, Ghost in the Shell (both SAC series were really good, and Yoko Kanno music is perfect as always), Ergo Proxy, maybe Blood +, had a really good plot and characters, as well as Mononoke, the creepy series:), its main character is simply awesome, although the show is quite weird.
Id also mention Last Exile, Kino no Tabi and Haibane Renmei. They are a bit different, each in their own way, but I must say they are excellent in their genre. I think of the show I have seen and try to remember more about them, some of them I think I enojoy more now when I actually watched them like Speed Grapher I mentioned. Would have to rewatch to make up my mind
From the few episodes of Mushishi I saw I could not tell anything about the character or whatsoever. There was I think one flashbacky looking scene, maybe more is included later. The whole story seems to be centered about new episodes, and I think it is an interesting series to watch if you are in an appropriate mood. Which I am not in at the moment:)
Texhnolyze- I really really recommend. Just dont get dicouraged after the first few episodes that are extremely enigmatic. In first one I think not a single word is uttered, and the dialogue is scarce in the next two, which I found very confusing. Then in the next ones you feel kind of like the main character, who has no clue or whatsoever what is going on. But once you reach episode 7-8 it all starts to make more sense, and the rest is quite brilliant in my opinion.
I had to rewatch the whole beginning once I knew what it was all about:) If I had to pick my ultimate apocaliptic series, I'd go for this one.
Speaking of music, which anime soundtracks do you like the most? -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 28, 2010 07:24 PM)
Yes.In the end it is always bitter sweetExcited to see what happens next, but at the same time know that it will soon be all over :/.
I felt pretty bad for Harry too in the end. When Sherri diedHowever he was pretty freaking sadistic when he "killed" Brandon in the elevator. Although he was deeply scared for doing itHe completely broke down in the store when he "helped" the kid.I always liked Bear WalkenFrom the first episode we were introduced to him I never thought he was a "villan" He was just doing it for his daughterHis wife died when Sherri was very little. It never said howProbably illness from the looks of itWas the episode where Brandon, and Bunji fought called Duel? I couldn't remember. That was the fight scene that I was referring to. I loved the dialog between Brandon, and Bunji in the end"I am sorry it came to this Bunji". "Hey don't sweat it broThat is just life".
I wish the other members of The Big Four stayed more human in appearance, but I guess that would have been kind of dull.
Ergo Proxy, and Blood + are on my "to do" list ;). I really want to check out the series Mononoke too..Creepy series with awesome main character sounds intriguing :). I need to check out Stand Alone Complex tooI always liked the movie
Man! I forgot about Last Exile! That one is no less than terrific for sure ;). I heard some good things about Speed GrapherI saw a trailer though, and the animation kind of turned me off at the time.
Okay Texhnolyze is in my Amazon shopping cart. Next payday that will be ordered ;). There were a few series that didn't click with me the first episode, or twoBut I always complete them :). Claymore was kind of cool, but it wasn't until episode 5 that I started to really appreciate the series. The first episode I saw of Cowboy Bebop was Ganymede Elegy where Jet runs into his old flameI thought it was cool, but the next episode I saw was later in the series. That one was Pierrot le FouI was completely blown away with that one. That is when I found out what anime was really about ;). After that episode I purchased the whole series!
Lets seeFavorite soundtracks would be something like this:
Cowboy Bebop (I guess I didn't even have to mention that Yoko Kanno goodness!)
Hellsing Original series (Thought the grungy music was just so fitting!)
Wolf's Rain (Haven't finished it yet, but love the music!)
Berserk (The song Forces is amazing!, Plus Monster is just incredibly creepy..)
Trigun (Amazing opening! Reminds me of Zeppelin..Plus the eerie Lengato music!)
InuYasha (I think a lot of tracks on that show are great, and powerful)
Baccano (Love the 30's feel of it. Reminds me of Bebop)
Claymore (I really love the closing music!)
That is all I can think of for nowHow about you? Sorry for the length of this post
Have a nice Day

Unicorn_Blade — 15 years ago(July 29, 2010 12:47 AM)
Was this episode not called "The Last Bullet"? Hehe, I definitely liked the super kick

Bear Walken was one of my favourite characters as well. I wondered whether by looking into Harry eyes he already saw what will become of him I did not feel as much sorry for Harry as for Sherri's father when she dies. It somehow seems suitable. In a way both of them massacred so many people, partially for her sake, so Harry should have known that it would come to a point when people would want to strip him away of his cozy private life just as he did to others. Then I cant really make up my mind up to which point he cared about Brandon. He seems shattered that he had to kill him, then some time later he forgets about him completely As fo Walken's wife, does she not die because of some mafia business? I remember Bear tries to talk Sherri out of dating Harry and says that he does not want the same thing that happened to her mama happen to her, and she says that in that case she believes that Harry and the Overkills will protect her I just did not know whether they mentioned anything else about it
As for Mononoke, checkit out on youtube maybe to see if would be something you would like it. In a way it is kind of like Mushihi, and the animation is very different from what you'd normally see. I liked it, because the stories are so different, but a lot of my friends found it hard to enjoy.
It was a few episodes before I got into Bebop as well:) At first I thought "Is that what the whole fuss is all about". I dont even know when I really started liking it. I thought it was good, but not brilliant. Then I almost laughed my head off during Toys in the Attic. I think one of my favourite episodes was the one when
Jet and Spike need to find a player to see what was on the tape
. But most of the ones after ep. 10 are falling into the 'brilliant' cathegory.
Oh oh, I just remember one film that I have shamefully omitted and I think is close to excellence, Jin Roh! Have you seen it? It has a great soundtrack, and the ending song is just amazing. Speed Grapher's animation might not be the best thing out there, and half of the show is "monster of the week" type of plot. But it gets better towards the end, and has some good characters as well. I'm definitely going to see Baccano! sometime soon, just wonder where can I get it. Buying anime in Europe is more expnsive than in the US I think, not so many places that sell it and often is so much more expensive
I like most of the OSTs done by Yoko Kanno, the range of music she does is amazing, from traditional stuff through jazz to electronic music and techno, she knows no boundaries:)
So for sountracks I'd definitely mention
Ghost in the Shell SAC, 1st and 2nd Gig
Cowboy Bebop
Jin Roh
Paranoia Agent (I think if I listened to the soundtrack without seeing the series, I would have disliked it, sonce I am not too much into this type of music, but it fits the show so well)
Paprika- done by the same composer as Paranoia Agent
Trigun (the industrial music is great!)
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust
Escaflowne
Neone Genesis Evangelion
And a bunch of random openings and endings:) I really like opening from Hellsing and from Gungrave.
Well, as you can see, I like long posts, the longer the better:) -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 29, 2010 06:46 PM)
Haha! Yes it was an amazing episode indeed ;). Amazing fight scene! It was that episode that I realized how frigging BIG those guns are!
I guess we finally find out who is the top Sweeper don't we? I always thought Brandon could have taken him before that any ways. Like the time when Bunji was supposed to snipe the guy in the adjacent building. He couldn't see through the curtains, and Brandon could
I am pretty sure Bear realized when he saw into Harry's eyes what he was going to doHe just couldn't do anything to risk Sherri's safetyHer Mother's death might have been the result of a Mafia hit gone wrongI do recall him telling her that nowThey don't shed anymore light on the subject though After all.. It is Brandon, and Harry's story right?
Well Harry has done some horrific things in the name of finding "Unlimited Freedom". If Brandon could have killed him all of those years ago. It would have saved a lot of people. I do truly feel that Harry was devastated that he "killed" BrandonI think him "forgetting" about Brandon was Harry's way of trying to hide the pain of knowing that he killed his best friend.
One of these days I will watch Mushishi. I know that it is a deep series with out much actionI just need to be in the right mood to watch it. You mentioned a few post ago that you really liked Haibane Renmei. Or was that Lord?
Oh! I forgot about the Betamax episode! LOL That one was very funny! What did you think of the movie? Toys in the Attic was funny, and in a way kind of creepy. I liked the fact that it was a homage to Aliens. What are your favorite Bebop episodes?
I have seen Jin Roh! It has been about five years thoughSo I don't remember much about it, or the music for that matterIf I remember correctly I enjoyed it
Thought it was a little depressing thoughNot Saikano depressing, but sad enough lol.
Yes! You won't regret watching Baccano! You should check that one out in EnglishThe dub in this case is superior I assure you. More authentic accents. Have you tried Ebay? How about AmazonUK? I like this one websiteI don't know if they ship internationally thoughwww.animecornerstore.com. They have a pretty big selection of titles. Let me know which one you end up going with
Those are great soundtracks! Really a lot of anime has great music. Some aren't as impressive as others, but are still good in their own right
Well I am glad that you like to read long post! This one is a short story
Have a nice Day
