My only comfort was that Vash never found out that Wolfwood got shot because he spared the bad guy trying to emulate Vash.
Oh, my thoughts exactly. Poor Vash. Poor Wolfwood. That was too sad for words.
I just got the manga yesterday, going to start reading it probably tonight. I didn't get Trigun Maximum, that will have to wait. 😄
I know the manga is a lot different from the anime (and things are in different order, etc), but I wanted to read it.

I think Vash might have been projecting onto Rem his own feelings on things. She was a peaceful person and loved life, but Vash had his own thoughts and feelings on these things and she did nothing to contractice them.
At least with that scene with the spider, she was fairly neutral. She more told Knives to not make those decisions so quickly (if I remember correctly, it's been a while since I've seen the episode). It looked to me like she was more disturbed that Vash was upset and that Knives was so quick to kill the spider than the fact that the spider died.
I think she would have wanted to teach Vash about the circle of life but she would have done it much more gently than Knives did.
I think those were more Vash's ideals than Rem's, but Rem's ideals were pretty close to his.
Not sure if that makes sense. LOL.

Yeah. I just don't remember all of what Rem said to Vash (or at least what they showed of her telling Vash). It just seemed to me that she was very pro life in all its forms, but if she had any sense she would have gotten around to explaining things to Vash, however gently.
Vash and Knives were very young, and Vash was very sensitive. My thought is she probably thought she had more time to get it through to Vash that sometimes one HAS to break a few heads to protect the innocent. At the very least, with respect to the spider, she may have explained things to Vash, but Knives was very quick to jump in to kill the spider, upsetting Vash. I know what Knives was thinking, "Vash wants to save the butterfly, so kill the spider." Who knows what Rem would have told Vash as he tried to save the butterfly. He would possibly have failed and she could have explained how that works.
I do agree she was an idealist, and was very protective of life even at the risk of her own. I have to watch that episode again, but I never thought she was too flaky.

Let me know what you think when you watch it again. I can't help thinking how much different Vash and Knives might have turned out if Rem had been a more balanced person. I don't know what she was like in the manga, and there was some more bad stuff on the ship with another Plant, but in the anime Knives was making sense and Rem shut him down.
Actually that was Vash that shut him down. Knive's killing the spider took them both by surprise and she didn't have a chance to say much of anything before Vash jumped on him. Yes, Knives was right, it's just that killing that spider like he did upset Vash hugely. The butterfly would have been damaged getting it out of the web, so Vash couldn't save it, but if Knives had just taken the spider off the web and put it on the ground, things wouldn't have gone so badly.
I have the DVD here, going to watch it then see if I missed something.

Ok, watching it again. She didn't exactly contradict Knives, but did tell him that one shouldn't [be so quick to kill] (or that would have been had she been able to finish the statement.
But there was another incident later on when Rowan had killed Mary, then pointed the gun at Knives' head. Rem stood in the way and Rowan told her to move. She said "nobody has the right to take the life of another." Poor little Vash was probably terrified and I'm sure those words of hers went straight to his sweet little heart.
It wasn't just that one incident, it was a combination of things.
I don't think she came off as being flaky at all. She was a woman who was dealing with some pain and was doing the best that she could to remain hopeful for the future. She wasn't a parent or an educator, she was doing the best she could with those kids.
Frankly, I'm not sure I would have done anything differently had I been in her place. I like to think I'd have sat Knives and Vash down after the spider incident and acknowledge that Knives was right, BUT But who knows?

                              Yeah.
While I don't think she was a flake, she really didn't think things through. Plus she WASN'T skilled with raising children and like I said, she had her own pain she was dealing with - when she put the kids in the life pod, she stayed behind, thinking that's what Alex would have done. I think she would have done it anyway, but she was thinking of Alex, just like Vash thought of Rem.
Plus, Vash was so sweet and sensitive and took everything to heart. It's hard with a child like that to give a good, balanced message. I am guessing she just didn't think. That wasn't her skill, she was just someone who played with them and tried to teach them to grow up right. How would she know what would happen to the boys or whether they would have their own ideas or just blindly follow her and what they experienced with her.
I cried at the end with poor Vash - again - when she sent the away. Poor sweet little darling. Vash is one of my absolute favorite characters (even named one of my kittens after him). Yeah, I'm glad he threw off his past with the coat at the end. I think he came out of that a much healthier person.

Yeah, I had the same thought about Wolfwood and MIlli. xD
Vash is a little brown tiger. His brother's name is Spike and he's also a little brown tiger (but his stripes are darker and he has more white on him). They're my babies. They're I think 11 weeks old now.

If I had kept the other three from this litter, I'd have had a Woolfwood (or Nicholas), Jet and maybe even Ein (they were all boys :). Did I mention I named the kitten from Mommy's previous litter Misa? 😄
I have six cats now which is more than I thought I'd wind up having, but there you go. I had 2, took in mama cat and her kitten because mama had gotten pregnant again. Gave three of the kittens to friends (so I can visit them, heheheh) and just kept the last 2. I got too attached. Of course if you count the stray that I"m feeding but don't allow into the house, I have 7. I'm working on my crazy cat lady status.
