This Movie was Just Plain Disgusting!

Wow what brought that on? I consider myself a fairly hardened movie watcher, having sat through many difficult and demanding movies, but this was one where I just did not want to watch anymore after 20 minutes, and simply turned it off. (Apparently missing some disgusting sex scene!) As it began, I was worried when I saw this highly neurotic daughter climb into the same bed with her shrewish mother, and then said "that's it" when she walked into a porno sex booth and started sniffing appreciatively the previous viewers' leavings!
I love a lot of European movies. Some of Bergman's are among my favorites. Recently saw "Black Book" just to give one recent example and thought it quite great as both entertainment and food for thought. I am really puzzled by the Anti-American tirade. Oh, well.
If you want to see other movies about troubled mother-daughter relationships, try "'night Mother" and "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds" they are both a good deal less queasy-making than "The Piano Teacher" is.
I am not going to rant against it; it just was not something I wanted to see. I surprised myself a little, since I used to feel it necessary to give everything a chance all the way through. Maybe I am getting old and am starting to value my time too much!

Funny, because, like some of Haneke's other work, this film implies far more than it actually shows us. By the lurid standards of horror movies, etc, this is not at all violent. I wonder if the problem is that it's too real, and thus we actually have to think about, have to feel for the characters?
Good art is nearly always challenging. This film was well worth my time. -

I completely agree with you. Haneke's work is not gratuitous in the nasty visuals, which is why I love it. Implied actions or events are so much better than taking a Saw-like approach and showing everything. Because then I look away from the screen and it's a wasted effort. I hate torture porn, and though Haneke's work has a lot of disturbing events, he does not make us watch the gory details. They are unnecessary and actually less effective in my opinion.
I also agree with you that what makes his work have so much more of an impact is despite his lack of showing everything, his films are so realistic. His camera use and lack of soundtrack allow us to easily forget we are watching a movie. There are no fancy cuts or movements of the camera, and a lot of continuous stationary positions. This makes us think we are watching something happening in front of us. Irreversible did the same in its most horrifying scene. Lack of soundtrack also makes us forget we are watching a movie, because 99% of movies use it. His movies take us out of our element, and he doesn't need to show us even a drop of blood to get to us.
Haneke drives me absolutely nutty in every one of his films. But I love him! They are probably the most realistic of any films I have scene. Also, not a lot of action occurs, and they are somewhat long, but yet I somehow cannot take my eyes off the screen! He's a genius. -

I do admit that some of the scenes were disturbing but you shouldn't be too worried about it. If anything i think Michael Heneke purposely but those scenes in to accurately fit the plot and to show how disturbed the protagonist really is. Also, i feel that the director was trying to get the film in touch with reality as much as possible. There are really people like that in this world and remember real life is never censored. The film was a great one but i don't think it would've been as powerful without the sex scenes (i.e the rape scene, etc.) which moved me to tears. -

Wow you love stereotypes!!! Everything bad on the internet is a characteristic of Americans? First of all that sentence makes no sense, it should be: everything bad on the Internet is a RESULT of Americans. Or even an INFLUENCE of Americans. Secondly, I have gotten like 20 viruses from other countries. The worst thing on the Internet in my opinion is viruses. Bored beep who have nothing else better to do with their time. Kind of like you! And these sex scenes were not that disgusting IMO; this person is just a prude or sheltered and it has nothing to do with what country they are from. You are just assuming they are American, kind of like I'm assuming you are a douchebag. I'm more likely to be right though

This is no foolish "escapism" like 99% of Hollywood crap. People accustomed to watch ONLY pop-corn flicks may find this movie at least disturbing because it dares to show what happens behind the door of certain homes.
Besides repressed people, religious zealots, conservative ppl most likely won't enjoy this flick or perhaps they will enjoy it a lot! but won't have the courage to admit it.
You never know what happens inside the head of people like Erika Kohut (The piano teacher) who apparently is a very conservative and self-righteous lady when actually his mind is full with the kinkiest and nastiest thoughts.
Just my 2 cents. -

There was no sex in the first 30 minutes.
All of the sex scenes were in the latter part of the film. And if you did turn it off at the 30 minutes you missed a treat.
