I'm so tired of seeing films where people involved in any kind of S&M are self-loathing, psychotic, self abusive, outwardly abusive, and seem to be incapable of having any sort of real relationship. This is not a reflection of lots of cases in the real world. The same way that a large percentage of lgbt films end with death, forced separation, or some other kind of pain/punishment for the lovers. Can we get some variation in representation of these characters and situations?

This isn't a film about sexual s&m. It's a character study of a pathological narcissist and her interior world of sadist-masochist that she tries to replicate externally. The book on which the film is based was a savage critique of Austrian society and a type of mothering. Don't assume that because a film references s&m that it's 'about' that.
