I've looked through this board and haven't found any comment on one weird aspect of the story -
    what
was wrong with Big Bird?? Costner's character makes some reference to it being stressed - if that is the case, where in the hell did the director find such a pitiful bird?? I have to say, seeing that poor bird was probably the creepiest part of the movie

I am a parrot owner. Parrots often get attached to one family member. If that person dies or moves away the parrot will often pull their feathers out due to stress. It is called "feather picking".
One parrot I adopted, Peanut Boy, had his owner die after they had been together for a long time. He missed his owner very much, and the man's widow had a pet shop find him a new home. He was missing a lot of feathers when I adopted him. Then, he got attached to my hubby, and he grew his feathers back. Peanut Boy was a happy bird from then on. We miss him very much:

Thanks, I thought that he looked like he had pulled out his feathers secondary to stress. What I don't get is why the characters never commented on why he looked so bad - the bird was definitely another character in the movie

I wish they would have explained the Big Bird's problem. If somebody does not know about parrots pulling out their feathers due to stress then it makes no sense at all. Yes, the parrot was a character in the movie, and they should have fleshed out the character more, or else why even have the bird in the movie?
I would like to see an additional scene at the end of the movie where Big Bird gets attached to the little girl and grows all his feathers back.

          Edited to fix typo.
