I can't believe only a handful of people mentioned Gallliopoli. That is for me the best Australian film ever made. How many people here cried during at the end?
    Other fantastic Aussie films:
Picnic at Hanging Rock (2nd best Aussie film ever)
    The Last Wave
    The Castle
Dark City (I know Alex Proyas is Australian but not quite sure about the rest of the production)
    Breaker Morant
In truth I'm not a huge fan of Priscilla. The stage musical recently played in Melbourne and I know there are die-hard fans out there. Sorry people!

I dont usually like Aussie films for some reason. They make damn sure everyone knows its an Aussie movie cos they put on ridiculous accents that most Australians don't even sound like. Chopper might be an exception because the real Chopper sounded like that. Anyway these are the only Aussie films I liked
              Candy
              Wolf Creek
              Chopper
              Lantana
              Crocodile Dundee 1 & 2
              havent seen Australia yet
If you piss in your pants you can only stay warm for so long

Picnic at Hanging Rock, The last wave and walkaboutdoes any one else love Jenny Agutter?
I'm not that proud of everything I've done, but I'm not that ashamed, either.

You can now add Animal Kingdom to the list.
Winter's Bone: Best film of 2010. Jennifer Lawrence is the next big thing.

                      My fav 3
                      Lantana
                      The Castle
                      Romper Stomper
Great twisty type film is Lantana so I bought it.
The Castleonly film I have ever watched and immediately rewound and watched again!! (extremely funnie but you have to know Aussie humor(Im a Kiwi))
I just liked skinhead movies back then but I also like the back story of the guy who played Davy (Daniel Pollock) and how he committed suicide by heroin overdose just after the movie came out or was it beforewho knows??
                      Stay Classy

I would want to add a couple of recent films which I thought were superb (if you like dark, brooding menace)
                        Animal Kingdom
                        Snowtown

Tough to come up with a top ten list. Movies kind of fade in and out of my memory but this thread has been a good refresher of a lot of good movies I'd forgotten.
So heres a list of (in my opinion) the better ones - no particular order.
                          Babe fun and clever
                          Shine just awesome
The Proposition gut wrenching and brilliantly filmed.
Sunday Too far Away my father was a shearer and he tells me it was a good reflection of the life and lifestyle.
Angel Baby I cannot believe this didnt get a mention - truly powerful and moving
The Big Steal just watched it again right now and loved it, yet again.
Crocodile Dundee come on, every loved this one
                          Breaker Morant
                          Dead Calm
Chopper a little over the top but riveting just the same
Romper Stomper powerful, loved the films hyperactive atmosphere and better than American History X
Gallipoli while maybe a narrow vision of the campaign, it does show the reality of the effect WW1 had on the young man populations of small towns all across Australia, an effect that took generations to correct.
Lantana excellent acting with a complicated script
The Castle & The Dish great fun movies
There are (of course) many more, but thats enough for now. Enjoy them all.

Just watched Lantana for the first time, and found this thread.
Brings back some good movie memories and the good times
I had in Australia back in '86.
Also gives me some titles to check out.
Hope the admins don't get rid of this one when they are "purging".
P.S. YMV Broke one of the best dramatic movies ever IMHO.
I liked Man From Snowy River when it hit theatres here in 'merica.
                                    Honorable mentions:
Rabbitt Proof Fence (True Story) cried on that one.
                                    Fringe Dwellers
                                    Sweetie
                                    Angel Baby
I'm sorry baby, I had to crash that Honda. ( Movie quote, not a movie)
