I can't stand Relena! The only character that I've seen that is more annoying than her would be Rei from Eva! Of what I've seen of Inuyasha Kikio would be even more annoying than Rei! But at least Rei has Cagalli's personality!

I hardly think Relena is winny and annoying, come on now.
we see the first few shows starting the season Relena can be a little off She doesnt know who her real friends are, everyone looks up to her at school, and she she doesnt like it. you see she only does it becuase shes thinks shes suppose to act that way. Then we see A new guy, and of course Relena is kind of intrested she wants to know more about him, you know finding him on the beach and all. Then he says He wants to kill her, by this point shes totally confused, you would be right? but she has this attrction twoards him and shes far in to deep now. Her dad dies and finds out that hes not even her real dad, theres nothing left for her. She has her fake mother but she doesnt feel that her "mother" can support her now. Then When she finds out more about Heero with Doctor J she feels that she understands how Heero Feels, since Doctor J tells how Heero really is on the inside. well now we've got a depressed girl that now knows what this war is all about, she wants to protect Heero and feels strong when shes in his presence. Now we see in the later shows shes not that "annoying" little girl thats confused anymore, but we see a woman that has grown up from her child stage, she matured as the war progressed.
yes Relena says "Heero" randomly but thats suppose to be the little "romance" that they tryed to put in this series.
In Endless Waltz I dont find Relena Annoying AT ALL shes very mature and says only the right things, I dont understand when you call her such a horrable annoying anime girl, b/c shes not. -

Any girl who actually stands on a cliff facing the ocean and yells out "Heero I'm right her Heero so come her and Kill Me!!!" clearly deserves to be shot.

I find the Relena hate humorous because those who flat out hate Relena usually are either:
A) People who missed the entire point of the series.
B) Missed that she and Heero are exactly the same at opposite ends of the spectrum. And if they just hate idealists Treize, Zechs, Lady Une and Wufei are all just as idealistic and I'd say Wufei in this movie tops them all in annoying habbits ("I'll start a war so I can fight again, because I was bored in peace, WHAAA").

C) Yaoui girls who can't stand a htereosexual relationship being the undercurrent force in this show with so many pretty boys to pair up (never mind that it is pretty clear that Duo is with Hilde, Zechs is with Noin, Treize is very not-gay and Wufei had a wife. Quatre and Trowa.maybe).
With that said RElena was annoying in the early episodes. That was the point. She was a niave little girl who only knew about the world around her. A boy she helped threatened to kill her and her father was murdered and then revealed he wasn't her real father.
I do agree she starts annoying but in episode 6 or 7 (the party episode) you start to see a change. She understands Heero (probably besides Zechs and Quatre, the only one who does) and why he does what he does. Sure she has a few annoying moments like when she fleis to Anartica to "deliver a letter!" but then she disappears for a dozen episodes or so.
When she comes back she is no longer weak. She became strong and was able to keep her feelings for Heero in check and lead a nation. Her methods were actually succeeding. They were idealistic, but no more than Treize's ideals that war is beautiful and humans must feel that beauty and thus retires because of mobile dolls. And let's not even get into Zechs/Dorthy's "By killing everyone on earth theyh wil lall know how awful war is and no longer fight!" BS.
She actually does make headway and Heero, Quatre, etc. see that she actually is the word's best hope for peace. When she is faced with either fighting and betraying her ideals or total defeat she opts self-surrender to the world which puts her in a position to take over Romeafellor.
Duke Dormale may have offered her the postion of head of state, but once she took it she realized she could use it to turn this corrupt military power into a world nation and was again, succeeding. HEnce, Heero deciding not to kill her. Zechs then (much like Mati Maya) blew that candle out.
I do think in the final episodes the writers make her revert back to the early episodes when Heero is in danger and it is a bit annoying, but I blame the writers not being able to write romance. But Heero and Relena's relationship is about healing each other and making the other grow. Heeror gets the will to live from his strength and love for her and understands that the horrors of war can be stopped. Relena grows up and becomes and a world leader and then.
In THIS movie she is no longer an idealist. She no longer goes around calling herself Relena Peacecraft hoping people will take head and listen. She instead pleads the world to stand up and fight to stop this crazy little girl now if they want peace. It can not just be held through diplomacy.
She is no longer obsessing over heero (though still in love with him) nor is she being idealistic. In the movie there are none of those "annoying" traits. So why the hate here?
Oh that's right, go back to the 3 points above. -

I agree with your points and your comment. I found Relena to be quite annoying in the beginning of the series and wished I could fast forward through her scenes. It wasn't so much her naivity or lack of knowledge of the world; it was the fact that (early on) Heero was clearly NOT interested and she wouldn't give it a rest. She went as far as following him to his new school just so she could see him. Obsessed much? (other comments mentioned the fact that she is always randomly saying "Heero", but failed to point out that Heero is always randomly saying "Relena". Goes both ways.)
I started to appreciate her character more when she found out who she really was and decided to act on it. She was no longer the insecure little rich girl. She begins to show her strengths and becomes a true leader. Like you said Heero begins to realize this as well and decides to let her live. I wish the series and the movie would have branched off more on their relationship because it leaves you wondering what becomes of them. -

I agree. In the beginning, she was annoying but her character grew into something I can like. She is very naive in the beginning (and it didn't help with all the insecurities teens have, her father holding a high position in gov't) and goes through a phrase of rash decisions but grows up through out the series, manga and other venues. SO give it a rest and stop hating on her because she destroys your "OTP"
I would also like to point out the fact, that in another anime Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (Ronin Warriors) the fans abuse Nausti (Mia) in the fandom because in the american verison, they tend to place her with Ryo whereas in the original version allude to a possible romance between Seiji (Sage) and Nausti (Mia).
You are allowed to dislike characters, it is natural but dont snap and freak out when people tell you that you shouldn't, just listen and take in their point of views.grow up.

Despite her development, you can't really blame people for disliking her because she was badly written in the first few episodes (first impressions make a big difference after all) and because the romance story itself was badly written (since it's another important aspect of her character).
That said, I found her earlier psychotic behavior downright hilarious.
Relena: (after seeing a guy beat up some paramedics and drives off in an ambulance) My name is (talking to nobody in particular) My name is Relena Darlian. (pauses, as though expecting a reply from someone with dramatic music playing the background) What's your name? (leaves her hand out and just stays like that for a while while the paramedics around her are probably writhing in agony)
Relena: No, Heero, don't do it! (a few seconds later) What are you doing, Heero?
Relena: (after she's saved from death by Duo) Stop it! What do you want to shoot him for? (treats guy who wants to kill her with dramatic music playing in the background again as though this scene is supposed to look anything but ridiculous)
Relena: (standing on a cliff talking to nobody yet again) Heero! I'm right here, so come and kill me!
Not to mention the countless instance of "say my name" that she goes through.
