what was the point of the cop?

I just watched the movie and i am puzzled. can someone please tell me what was the point of the female cop? what did she do to deserve a place in the movie?

She was there to create additional suspense, to let us (the audience) know the villain really is a cold-blooded murderer who's word isn't worth anything, who tortured and killed the guy who ripped him off and who broke the deal with the other doctor and killed the girlfriend. Thus we were meant to be afraid of what will happen, even if the main character manages to deliver the number in time.
Then the cop was there to make the doctor leave the hospital with the patient, and to be there at the showdown and provide the help and distraction the doctor needed to best the villain. Her long-winded investigation and how it got her to the island was meant to have us on the edges of our seats, if she would be in time.
I'll admit, nothing in this film is particularely elegant, everything is every routine and clichd, but the female cop was an integral part of the story. -

It's a B-plot. Movies are always full of them. Watching the two stories come together is a classic movie and storytelling technique.
And her investigation does reveal more about Patrick's evil personality and intentions.
So many stories, so little time.
