Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Session 9

Sorry, I hated this movie from start to finish. I had it figured out early in the beginning. I found it neither a horror movie, or psychological thriller. Just badly mad and uninteresting. I know those who did find it interesting like to think they are clued in to something higher, but I see it just the opposite. Ranks right up there in my book of overhyped movies (like Paranormal Activity, which deserves it's own thread on why it was so NOT scary and boring).

because it was SOOO HARD to understand.
The most cookie-cutter, least frightening horror/thriller I've ever seen in my entire life. Very unbelievable characters, a plot that was confusing at times and completely predictable most of the time. Overrated as beep.

Why watch a movie if you're going to try and "figure it out"? Movies are supposed to be an escape, just let them take you where the filmmakers intend instead of trying to solve a puzzle within a time limit.

You're the reason people make fast and furious and we are getting buried with super hero films . 😕

So, what's your idea of a "good" horror film, then? One of those vulgar low-budget slasher movies or something? These days it's extremely difficult to find a horror film with originality, and it's hard to find modern horror films that don't have a bunch of nudity and cheap jump scares. When a film like Session 9 comes along, I'm always really grateful. If you don't appreciate it, that's your choice, but seriously? Everything from the well-placed soundtrack to the historical references to the scenery, was absolutely fantastic.
                Canada, eh?
                🙂

i agree but for different reasons. the plot wasn't what fell short for me. it was just going into with with high expectations for a movie with a 6.5 rating. i was expecting to get scared. nothing scary about this movie. wish there were scenes that made my heart jump.

Movie had so much potential in the first 20 minutes. Was expecting something on the level of Jacob’s Ladder/The Shining/The Innocents/Woman in Black in terms of psychological/gothic horror. And for a while it succeeded, until it became just a silly story about some guy going crazy and killing his coworkers.
There was a lack of any actual scares aside from a couple of scenes at the beginning (“hello Gordon” and the law school reject’s tale about the satanic child abuse). After that it just became cheesy, low budget, weak af jump scares. The filmmakers had a great concept to work with but the script needed serious rewrites. Also it seemed a waste to have access to this fabulous mental asylum and shoot 95% of the movie in the daytime.
