my take on it
City By The Sea was a pretty good film, and deNiro was good in it and since Heat he hasnt done any extremely good films, with the exception of Wag the Dog which was absolutely AWESOME, one of my fav movies of all time great acting by Bobby and dusty hoffman altho Hoffman did sort of steal the show, it was because his character was a bit more complex than that of deniro's I actaully liked Analyze This alot, i thought it was a very original comedy and was hilarious, one of the funniest movies ive seen Sleepers was a good film in my eyes, although DeNiro's part wasnt big, it didnt need to be.. Hoffman had a small part as well Jackie Brown was pretty good although DeNiro didnt really play a big part in it.. i thought his performance in The Fan was awesome, a very hard one to pull off, although the film wasnt exactly the best his performance was very good so in conclusion, has bobby fell off? not really, is he as good as he was before, no

Not so, He is brilliant in anything and everything he is in, try Awakenings, the Score, Cape Fear, The Fan, This Boys life, Stone, Casino, HEAT, to name a few that he is great in and not a mobster. Heat he is the bad guy so to speak I guess, but this is his best i think, for me anyway, what about Raging Bull and Taxi Driver? I guess you could class these as the bad guy ones too, still amazing talent no matter what role he is in, the thing about De Niro is he does not really act, he "BECOMES" Also Flawless(99) he is not the bad guy. He's one of the greatest of all time everyone who knows cinema knows this. Duh.
Oh guess we should not forget the Deer Hunter, no mob guy there! -

I actually like his performance in City by The Sea, despite the fact the movie itself is not great. There are two types of De Niro movie, the 'appearance' type, where he turns up reads his lines (more than adequately) and gets paid.
Then there is the 'performance' type, where you can clearly see he is giving it his all. I think this movie is one of those, despite the fact it's not one of the better films he has starred in, but that's not due to his performance.
He is not the only star that turns up for the occasional paycheck, all actors of his stature do it, and who can blame them. After all most of them put in many years without a paycheck getting where they are today. Good luck to them! -

It's pretty wild that 13 years later, De Niro is still cashing in haha. I was never a huge De Niro fan, but I must admit that over 60 years of starring in successful movies each year is an incredible accomplishment
