What's the city where action takes place?

I think in the movie it's Long Beach, NY. There is a place like this in Nassau County in Long Island, but I've been there a couple of times, and it's a quiet suburban town, not even close to Serbian army leftover pictured in the movie.
Also, I've never heard of an Original Ganster (OG) who is white. And for the most part, gangsters in this movie are white. It just seems unrealistic. Mafia in Italian and Irish neighborhoods are not a bunch of low life junkies, and those neighborhoods are much nicer than the one pictured in the movie. -

This is a repeat message to another thread, but I am compelled to do this to reach all I can for the slander by the creators of this film.
Long Beach was NEVER
as bad as fits the author's imagination. He had a need to believe in this great suburban failure, for it fits his politics. Long Beach had a bit of downturn in the 60's and 70's, with two many seedy ripoff old age homes along the beach, but the entire community came roaring back over time. It's a gorgeous ocean front neighborhood, and condo's on the beach can sell for a million dollars or more today. Anyone with the slightest doubt as to my veracity, go there and see for yourself. Park you car anywhere you wish and walk along the "dangerous" boardwalk for as long and as far as you wish. Shop in any store you wish on Long Beach Avenue, two blocks inland from the beach. Ofcourse, you will have trouble finding good parking on the streets in the summer, when it gets packed. I'd like to picture the imbeciles who made this film all broken up inside and crying that the
perfect surbuban Hell of their pitiful imaginations is a flowering community of beautiful streets and homes, everywhere you look. It must kill them. -

I'm thinking you might be from Long Beach M2b, lol
But seriously, film makers do this all the time and choose locations which are actually nothing to do with where they're supposed to be set (e.g. Half Light with Demi Moore was supposed to be in Scotland, but was nothing like it, was actually an island off Wales). I believe you that Long Beach is actually a great place, but what a hole Asbury Park, NJ is! Anyone know why it's so run down there?
By the way, if you see the film right to the end, the final line after the credits is "This film was not actually filmed in Long Beach"
Must have been a moot point at the time as another poster mentioned. -

it IS filmed in asbury park, nj. it's not quite as run down anymore as the movie makes it seem, but it is pretty bad. it used to be an old beach town that became deserted and low income housing moved in. they're trying to rebuild it now.
the main building that "Joey" lives in, is actually a decently clean building called Convention Hall - lots of concerts are still held there, they just graffiti-ed it and made it more run down for the movie.
