I really doubt if groupies do it for fun. Probably makes them feel better about themselves to be able to think they were 'the one' picked for a roll in the kip with a 'star,' except ones such as the gal who was on VH-1 letting some 'rock god' throw bologna on her butt for recreation.

I wouldn't be a groupie but that doesn't mean that nobody should.. I don't give a rat's a$$ what people do with their lifes, they're choice..
Oh and this movie was awesome, whoever wants the 2 hours back, need to get them back by not wasting time watching dumb movies like Epic Movie or those movies for morons.

It's not all about sex.
I just want to reiterate that point. Pamela des Barres in her books makes a very clear distinction between groupies and star beep particularly in her latest book "Let's Spend the Night Together". Bebe Buell does this too. It's not just an attitude of "We legendary groupies are better than anyone else", it's pointing out that a true groupie is a rock muse - what is it that the girls say in Almost Famous? They are there because they love that silly piece of music so much, they are there because of the music, they are there to inspire the music.
Groupie doesn't necessarily equal sex. beep does = desperate sex though, someone who just wants to beep the famous guy/girl.
While The Banger Sisters doesn't really go too deeply into this stuff (that's Almost Famous' function!), there's nothing fundamentally wrong with BS's message that being a groupie is a fun thing to do.
And what's with all this conservative hatred of casual sex?? Hell - if anything takes place between two consenting adults, why is it so wrong? If a woman "sleep around" then some may consider her a slut but if a bloke does it then he's just spreading his wild oats. WTF??? That's a ridiculous double standard!
Sex is fun. Lose the hangups about it. -

I don't see a problem with casual sex, as long as you're safe.

Wow. So many ridiculous, judgemental comments in this thread. It's laughable, really. If you're judging these characters just because they used to have sex with rock stars then I think you missed the point of the movie entirely. As for the "do it true!" statement, it's a good sentiment that was unfortunately marred by the poor delivery of a bad actress. Luckily Erika Christensen isn't landing any major roles anymore. She was the worst thing about this movie. Goldie and Susan had great chemistry, that's what really carried the movie imo.

Oh my, some of the posts and replies here are truly interesting.
So the facts are, no Groupies are not Prostitutes in that they do not get paid for sex, but some Groupies do have sex with road crew to get to bands which some may see as the same thing! Its usually a last resort though. They will also sleep with any band member, they are usually not choosy!
Groupies and Fans are two different things, Groupies sleep with band members more as a 'claim to fame' (check out Vinnie & Suzette's 'Rock Cock Collection'), they also do tend to know the band members having hung around for a while (not all, but most). They generally look down on the Fans however do not realise that the Fans look down on them!
Also with reference to the person who said things were different back in the 60s nothing has really changed as far as Groupies go whether its the 60s or 2009!
As far as Fans go they are just into seeing/following bands but they don't have sex with them, and yes Groupies are promiscuous, I can also tell you that they are very very unpopular with hard line Fans. And the bands always know which is which!
However the crucial thing is and this is the Suzette/Vinnie thing Groupies do not see themselves as doing anything wrong, they are basically just out for a good fun time. Unfortunately they can't see themselves for how they are seen by others, just someone to have quick free meaningless sex with.
Could say more but will leave it there - and before anyone comments unnecessarily, no I don't happen to have ever been a Groupie, however I have moved in the music industry most of my life and have seen it all. -

i dont think they are prostitues. and really, what are they doing thats any different to everybody else?
i go to nighclubs, and there are girls everywhere, drunk as anything, going home with sleazy guys to have one night stands. and people do that on a regular basis.
so a groupiewho usually spends more than one night with a rock star really isnt doing anything different (or worse!) than anybody. its their choice, its consentual, and to be perfectly honest, how many groupies regret what theyve done?
groupie should not be a bad word. the word to me means freedom, lust and passion.
but feel free to have your own opinion

groupies are idiots.People may have casual sex but they dont do it to feel they are hot stuff.Groupies think they accomplished something special by sleeping with a rockstar.As far as comparing to prostitutes,they are much worse than many prostitutes.Most prostitutes do it as a job,most dont have any other way, its a way of surviving,many of them have children to support and it can even be seen as a noble thing.Groupies on the other hand are just stupid oversexed women and crack-heads.
