What's the guy doing in this MOVIE??!! Rush is a great actor, but his American accent is appalling and there is just no way I'd buy him as a washed-up Hollywood hack in this film.

Geoffrey Rush is an amazingly talented chameleon who can play just about anybody. And I didn't notice anything wrong with his accent.
Whether his CHARACTER belonged in the movie is another matter. The whole subplot of the writer getting involved with Suzette seems to have been thrown in just to pad out a script that was a few pages short.
All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?

Really?! I thought he was fantastic!
And no offence, but I would hardly consider him washed-up! (even working as recently as Pirates of the Carribean)
            Do guys like "the thing"?
They like it better than no thing.

I think the OP meant the character was a wash up, not the actor.
A few times I thought his accent somewhat muddled, but I think it was more that the character spoke so hesitantly.
I'll watch Rush in anything he can go from playing this to de Sade almost without a costume change.
