Goldie Hawn was the Laugh-In girl so you expect her to still be a hippie at however old she is now . I think it would have been a more interesting film if they had cast against type and made her the groupie who marries the lawyer and Susan Sarandon the one who never grew up instead.

Hmm, that would've been interesting, and maybe made the script a little more believable. It seemed very unlikely that Sarandon really would have made such a dynamic change, because she played the part of the uptight mom so well. Hawn would have been a little more understandable, I guess.
Personally, I thought Geoffrey Rush was perfect. The daughters annoyed the hell out of me, though!

Ginger was frighteningly similar to my younger sister.

          Oh, I disagree.
I can see someone from a past like that working hard to create a life that appears the polar opposite IF they are trying to run from that past, like Lavinia is.
What I find a little unbelieveable is how Suzette stayed so unbelievably the same. She's around 50 and living in what appears to be some studio apartment with hippie crap, candles, and posters all over the place, like a 20-year-old. It's like time stopped when Lavinia left town. Pretty sad.
Both women's mistakes are the whole moral of the story - It's important that you remember and honor your past, but you can't live there.
