    Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Ghost Ship

    BladinRider54 — 11 years ago(May 21, 2014 09:46 AM)

    What was the most difficult phase of your career?
    Margulies: OK, I'll start: 2002's Ghost Ship. It had been written as a psychological thriller about what happens when you have too much of something money is evil, greed, and these two people start going crazy so I said yes!
    It was a big Warner Bros. picture. I was the lead with Gabriel Byrne. Then I got off the plane in Australia and the script had totally changed. Suddenly, I was in a really awful horror movie, and it was shocking.
    Did you blame anybody?
    Margulies: No. Whom do you blame? I think you get back up and go, "Maybe there's a better one down the road." And I'm huge in Japan. (

    )
    I don't think there's anything you can do except be disappointed for a minute and move on.

      Thanks for sharing BladinRider54.
      Margulies' words echo the thoughts of many associated with the film. It's a controversy and sore spot for some even after 12 years.
      The potential elements for a good story were all there along with excellent sets, superb artwork, production crew and talented actors.
      It appears the movie's perceived money making appeal may have been a factor in rewriting it more as another typically Hollywood slasher.
      If Ghost Ship had been made the way it had been written after its first more "minor" revisions it would have been something new and a little "outside the box" for its time. However, taking a chance on something different was a risk some were unwilling to take.
      It would be interesting to see if one day the film is redone more in line with the original concepts.

        I don't know anything about the original script but on paper this movie had it all: a nice cast, big budget and fantastic production values. When I watched Ghost ship I had the feeling that in better hands the concept could have made a much better movie.
        Again, I don't know what the amendments were but I do know that you do not put techno music and lame cgi in a horror film.

              Maybe Gabriel was also fooled by the script like Julianna, or he likes doing horror movies. He did play the devil in End of Days and stared in Stigmata.
