It's interesting to see how polarized everyone's opinion on this is.
I'm only 4 episodes into the UK office but I ll give my take. The UK version seems less over the top and the characters are more believable. The comedy is all really awkward but it's really funny if you like that kind of humor. Even just 4 episodes in I can tell why the show (and more specifically David Brent) spawned an American spinoff. I do see why it doesn't appeal to everyone though.
The US version still uses a lot of awkward humor but it's a bit more hammy and
lighthearted, so it doesn't feel as "real" - which I think American audiences tend to prefer in their comedy. There's also a bit
more focus on love lives / relationships of
each character, sometimes for comedic effect and sometimes for dramatic effect. The show is a bit more inconsistent because there are 20+ episodes a season, but the first three seasons are really good and definitely worth checking out - season 1 is similar to the UK version so not for everyone, but 2/3 are more
accessible. The show took a dive in quality after season 3 but season 4-7 are still decent. I had to stop watching after Michael left around season 8 because he was responsible for 80% of the laughs in the show.
Tldr; both are great but they're very different. If you're American you'll probably prefer the US version and vice versa. Personally I like both and can't say I really prefer one or the other.

Uk version is genuine feelings of the situation, usa version is just stupid gags. Its not like when you have the feelings of the people on the screen.

I would definitely watch the UK version. First it is only 14 episodes and two specials so you could breeze through it. The UK version as people have said is based on awkward but awkward is really funny and more realistic to me. The UK version's characters are believable and you could see it actually happening. How about doing an update and saying which one you tried and what lyou thought.

British is so much better. I had seen that so many times, then tried to watch the usa version it was a poor cheap copy and just made be sick. British humor is not easily matched by usa comedy.

Start with the original. It's a comedy about comedy but it's not done in the style of a sitcom like Friends or The Big Bang Theory.

I watched us first (about 6 seasons) and then uk. Only watch the uk one if you love the us one is my advice. I enjoyed both a lot but the uk one is harder to watch.

After watching the original, I tried to watch the US version, got about 20 minutes in and found it to be such an unfunny knockoff, I couldn't even get through the first episode. The reason the show is great is because of the British humor. It's an essential component. The American version is like attempting to make peanut butter without the peanuts. I should probably give it another try and actually watch it before judging so harshly, but I didn't like what little I saw. I find it interesting that there are people who like both versions when they clearly don't elicit the same sense of humor.

I really wanted to like this series, but after a couple of episodes of season one I returned the DVD to my public library. I didn't like the actors having short soliloquies several times in each episode, for one thing. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

UK one. US one is just an American sitcom.

I didn't watch the american version just for a reason: I'm not in favor of take something and squeeze it until it's dry. Therefore my thanks to Merchant, because he and Gervais have a fantastic chemestry. They deliver an original and really well done piece of art. Wich was selled, adapted and showed everywhere with different names - Stromberg (German adaptation) have his own movie- .
U.S., German, Chilean, Canadian, and French among other versions are byproducts, hence not the real stuff.

I only watched the UK version which I loved. I didn't watch the US version because frankly, I had just discovered Arrested Development which in my most humble of opinions is a much better show than any version of the Office. PERIOD.

A lot of americans are going to say the US version because they are not used to British dry humour. The UK version is much more subtle and awkward. That's the genius of it.

There's one big difference between the two: the US version is bollocks and the UK one isn't.
Gervais has never since done anything as good.

I've only seen the US Office and it's so good but only with Michael in it. Once he leaves it becomes unbearable. Apparently the UK Office is darker and the 'Michael' character is actually really nasty.
