Many years ago as a young guy I had a boss that was similar, he really thought he was gods gift to Humanity and had a massive ego. Needless to say that like Brent he was basically incompetent at his job, the staff secretly hated him and he eventually got fired.

David Brent is a model of modesty compared to the people I have had to suffered down the years. One man was a deadline driven task master while trying to give the impression he was everyone's friend. One woman tried to project a happy go lucky image but really was a awful bully who was also lazy and incompetent. Another woman took great delight in her own arrogance. Recently I had to suffer a man who laughs at his own jokes very loudly but when he was moved to a different section he threw a bit of a diva fit.

I had a boss from hell, in fact he owned the company - He wanted so badly to be friends with new employees that he would invite us to his home for barbecues, take us out for meals and even weekends away. He saw it as a bonus or substitute for pay increases but we all felt that we would rather be given extra financial rewards so that we could go to the places that we wanted to go and socialise with our own friends. Of course as new employees none of us would tell him that. It struck me at first that he was very good at making new friends very easily but I began to realise that he lost them as easily as he found them and basically had no friends outside of work.
He was similar to the kid in the playground who has all the sweets but nobody wants to talk to him so he gave his sweets away to anyone who would be his friend if only for a brief period.
