Actually, yes I DO have sick sense of humour, but that's got nothing to do with my opinion of this film. OK, Madonna's acting was a bit suspect, but I was looking beyond all that, and just thought that it was a really surprisingly good film!

Same here. This film mat have been 'disappointing' to many but it's not rubbish. The story and dynamics are really powerful. This film was savaged before it was even seen. Was sabotaged by it's lack of promotion and ridiculously limited release. Of course no one went to see it, it wasn't shown anywhere.
This film needs to be seen for what it is, an entertaining battle of wits. It's not meant to change your life, it's just a film. -

You were in tears at the heart wrenching final scene? She get's on a plane and flies away. You know she's not the type of person who would be hard to find, he could get on another beep plane and go after her. The ending's terrible, the whole movie is terrible. It's just so sad, Madonna ruined her husband's movie career

The ending is real. How many of us have a true love out their but it will never materialize because of the obstacles reality has put in our way? Their guys where almost home free, yet the last obstacle was the most deceiving one that pulled them apart. Enough so there would be no recourse.

He went running after her. He runs after her, makes it to the helicopter and it's like, oh my god I'll never see her again. I've ony seen it once and I'll never see it again but I remember that. If he ran after her, he could get on a plane. It was lame. The ending was lame just like the rest of the movie.

She didn't ruin Guy's career - it's the other way around. She had some good performances over the years (Desperately Seeking Susan, League of their Own, Dick Tracy, Dangerous Game, and Evita) but working with Guy brought out all the worst habits in her and turned her into box office poison,

To all those who think that the ending is lame on grounds that the Italian can easily find her so there's no point in making such a big deal about it. It's not that he can't go after her and find her; what matters is that he was left with the impression she returned the ring he gave her, so she must have changed her mind and decided to stay with her husb. She, on her side, was left with the impression that he never wrote that note to her. They were both insecure in each other's love remember that scene on the island when she went like "You can easily change me for some younger and prettier." and then the scene when he told her "I am not rich, I'm just a fisherman, this is not a fairy tale", etc., etc. So why would he bother catching a plane chasing after her?? That was the test, wasn't it if she would be tempted to go back to the spoiled life she was used to.
Then why did he bother to run after the helicopter anyway, right? It was an immediate reaction of a man in love who's about to lose his beloved. Hey, people, have you ever been in love?? After she's gone, he will come to his senses: "I lost her. There's no point in going after her. This was her choice. I love her so I will let her live the way she wants." or "I'm not good enough for her." or "I knew it! I knew she would give in. She's never loved me."
So you see, it's not the distance that's separating them.
I admit that the ending is quite typical for a romantic comedy/drama someone is running after someone who's in a plane, helicopter, taxi, bus, riding a horse, bycicle, scooter, whatever.., so that the viewer can wonder "Is he going to reach her in time? Oh God, please, look down and see he's there!!" All the same, I wish someone would run after me in such a "lame" way.
.. and catch me.
Convinced you? -

You got it, problem is, if a movie doesn't have the boy gets girl happy ending people hate it, yet how often is life that simple, reality check, it's just not popular in movies. I liked it, insecurity ruined it for both of them.
Wasn't me -

i completely agree with youit's a stunningly shot, beautiful film with gorgeous cinematic aspects. true, madonna's acting may be a tad less oscar-worthy than her contemporaries, but i did notice that there is a distinct difference in the quality of her performance once they get to the islandshe's more natural, convincing.
all in all, it's one of my favorite films, and for good reason. anybody who doesn't agree doesn't possess the unique vision we fans do

I've seen both the original Giancarlo Giannini one and the Richie-Madonna Remake.the original is for sure superior, more dramatic, more realistic and with better actingBUT the remake wasn't as bad as people saidok,it was more of a comedy than a serious film IMO,while the original one was almost 100% serious dramanonetheless, the remake still entertained and touched me+ if u think that 28 years after the first one,we get Giannini's son,Adriano to star in the remake,it's pretty amazing
I believe there were 3 reasons for which people hated the remake:
1.They had seen the original one and they didn't like the different tone the remake had
2.They were Richie fans,so they were expecting a far more serious storysthg complex like Lock Stock or Snatchrather than just a comedy with some drama in it(which,I believe was too shortthe 1st one focused more on the relationship that was created on the island between the 2 "cast-aways")
3.They were Madonna haters,so no matter how much effort she put to make the movie believable, they bombed the movie.(yes,I do believe that Madonna did a pretty good job here..not Oscar worthy performance, but still goodhaters must ask themselves:if Madonna wasn't famous as she is now,but she was one of those actresses that appear in just one movie and then disappear, would they have hated the movie as they did?Yes is not an answer here)
So,that's my advise..forget all the people involved in the movieforget all the big names.lay confortable on ur couch and enjoy the movie:^)
