For me, it's the other way around. I don't really get it with American Beauty

I just watched AALCC yesterday and absolutely adored it. My favorite movie of all time was American Beauty, but after watching this, it doesn't seem as special to me anymore. Don't get me wrong, I still love American Beauty but it isn't my favorite movie anymore. I really need to rearrange my list. I can't say that I have been affected by a movie like I was with AALCC. It was so beautiful and so moving. I'm going to rewatch American Beauty to see how I feel about it now. But for sure, AALCC will stick with me the rest of my life.

American Beauty was preachy and formulaic in parts, so Lily wins.

I'd say American Beauty, but that's not to say I don't LOVE Lily Chou-Chou.

I admit the whole poll is a bit biased since after all this IS an AALCC board 😉
I saw Lily Chou-Chou for the first time some time ago and it's definitely not easy to watch. However the mood around the movie is amazing and very powerful in its entirety. I'm glad I saw for it moved me greatly.
American Beauty was just a brick that didn't move me a bit.

                        I liked
                        American Beauty
better, but I don't see the point of comparing these two films. One of them is about disturbed inhabitants of a quiet suburb whose outer beauty is just a mask for their insecurities and perversions, while the other movie is about alienated Japanese teens in an emotionally fragile stage of life, clinging to the music they can relate to and enduring an insensitive, cruel environment. The two films don't have much in common, really.
