As I was watching it I tried to think of music I would liken to this whole "ether" thing
I guess Sigur Ros, Thoman Newman (composer), Thom Yorke, Massive Attack, some Beck, and Brian Eno all have an ethereal quality.

has anyone heard of the Pj Harvey song when under ether?
i think its these kind of dreamy songs that sort of drugs you which is ether..
i just wanna know if anyone has listen to the song cos i'm kind of dying to know if the song is related to the movie..
the lyrics are below. it kind of gives a lily chou chou feeling doesn't it?
                The ceiling is moving
                Moving in time
                Like a conveyor belt
                Above my eyes
                When under ether
                The mind comes alive
                But conscious of nothing
                But the will to survive
                I lay on the bed
                Waist down undressed
                Look up at the ceiling
                Feeling happiness
                Human kindness
                The woman beside me
                Is holding my hand
                I point at the ceiling
                She smiles so kind
                Something's inside me
                Unborn and unblessed
                Disappears in the ether
                One world to the next
                Human kindness

in my opinion, ether songs are closest to artiists like cat power, frou frou, imogen heap and feist.
i dont know why but i like to think female artists similiar to the singer lily chouchou in the movie.
no offense but i think the indie bands are too folk and radiohead is too rock heavy, they dont really give the ether effect

Are you insane? Radiohead is pure ether. In fact I don't even like to place 'ether' so much on Radiohead because this just brings Radiohead down to a label rather than the abstract, calmingly spacey, metaphysical, whimsical idea that they are. But most of their music, particularly Kid A qualifies under this. There is something going on with Radiohead that I simply cannot put into tangible words. You are really, really missing out if you think this way about Radiohead. What a shame.
And Ether has nothing to do with being a particular type of music either, i.e. rock music. It has to do with the bellowing of the souls song and lateral philosophical thought process it vessels your mind to, connecting everything. This is why these kids loved Lilly Chou-Chou because this is exactly the effect she had on them and it was amplified through their disconnection with world as they felt connected to something through the ether and Lily's ambience. All genres of music can qualify as ether as long as this effect is made on the listener.

I would like to second some of the other names mentioned: almost anything by Sigur Ros, Brian Eno's ambient works, quite a few Radiohead songs. Below are some additional suggestions that mean a lot to me and I feel have that from-the-ether quality (sort-of-but-not-exactly in order of my own biased preferences/recommendations).
                        Full albums:
// Artist - Album (suggested tracks if not taking the full album dive) //
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (In The Aeroplane Over The Sea; Two-headed Boy)
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (Soon; Sometimes)
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene (Bandwitch; Ibi Dreams of Pavement)
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden (Eden)
                        Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
Eluvium - Copia (Prelude for Time Feelers; Radio Ballet)
Eluvium - Talk Amongst Trees (New Animals from the Air; Taken; One)
Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island (Naomi)
Do Make Say Think - & Yet & Yet (Soul and Onward)
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (War on War)
Some individual songs in no order whatsoever:
                        A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras; Orestes
                        Tool - Parabol; Parabola;
Tujiko Noriko - Saigo no Chikyu; No Error In My Memory
                        Tortoise - Dot/Eyes
                        Mogwai - Dial: Revenge
Iron and Wine - Upwards Over the Mountain
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Over The Rainbow
                        Architecture in Helsinki - Souvenirs
A Silver Mt. Zion - 13 Angels Standing Guard 'Round the Side of Your Bed
Explosions in the Sky - First Breath After Coma; The Birth and Death of the Day
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! - In This Home On Ice
                        Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet
                        Happy Listening!

The only other ethereal singer besides Salyu (a la Lily Chou-Chou) I've come across is the Japanese indie singer Miyo.
EDIT: I forgot Utada Hikaru! She's R&B for the most part, but her songs Sanctuary/Passion and Beautiful World could be considered ethereal.

or is this an entirely different singer?
just curious as Im trying to find some of this music listed on both of these music reccomendation listings
