Bit of a classic considering it set the whole “copy Japanese horror movies” trend.
It’s the only one that did it well, even improving some aspects of the story

If it's not already considered a classic, it won't be long until it is.
I 2nd Jack in saying that it improved some aspects of the original, but I do find the effects of the Ring girl a bit more typical of jump-scare horror, and not quite as terrifying as the Japanese version. It's probably the only thing the American version didn't do better.
That said, all of the American-made Ring movies since haven't been very good.
