Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Ring

Her curse should have a chain/line, where after you pass it on you are still in that chain. Otherwise that chain for hers could break the moment somebody sees their seventh day.
Say Rachel passes the curse to Noah, and he is killed. Afterward, she should get another phone call and another seven days to pass it on again, otherwise Samara would come back for her.
This would have been a more enticing sequel, not necessarily for Rachel but even for Jake. Maybe Rings (the short film) is the "beginning" of the plot in a way, and he gets somebody to see it in the electronics store before he is kicked out of there. After a week passes, he gets another phone call for a seven-day timer, and it starts all over. This time though he would really be pressing for someone like Emily to watch the tape.
Heck, all of this could just be a prologue prior to Rachel's story again, but the scary part about it is that she not only witnesses another death, but that maybe she and Jake had encountered each other at one point where she discloses that he has to make a copy, and thought he was saved. Once she sees his face after he goes though, she'd be afraid that the curse would be coming back to Aidan after certain people start dying one-by-one.
I don't know, something like that kind of threat would make you always look over your shoulder. Maybe the new film will have something along those lines.

Great response. I'd love to hear a little more as to why raised stakes would be a bad thing.
The whole point is for her to spread her curse. If the chain breaks, it literally cannot spread anymore.

You do realize that her chain breaks if anyone who watches her tape dies, right?
