I think it's original. What other story were they supposed to come up with that hasn't been done a hundred times?

I agree its creepiest film. The part with her coming out of the tv scarred me big time but i think insidious is scarier now.

Scary is not the same thing as creepy. A clown staring at you from a couple of feet away in the dark is creepy, not scary. A ax-wielding murderer chasing you is scary, not creepy. So it makes sense that you find Insidious the scariest movie ever but think that The Ring is the creepiest movie ever. I am the same way, but with other movies. The Poughkeepsie Tapes is the most disturbing movie I have ever seen (because of its ending; I got legit chills on my face) whereas a certain scenes from Ju-On 4 were definitely the most creepiest I have seen.

This movie is no where near scary, never mind the scariest. It's eerie and suspensful yes, but what makes it great IMO is the mystery behind the story, and how it develops throughout the movie. It is ridiculous, but it's original and, in some ways, more creative

Would have stayed away from the video tape myself. Would have just psychic hijacked those kids in cabin 12 since they were tromping around on Samara's resting place and used mirrors to haunt them. Then seven days later go for the kill etc

I totally agree with you. Sometimes every piece just fits together perfectly. The production values are very high with this film and music, sound, cinematography and casting are really flawless. To me this is hands down a perfect horror film.
The story may sound silly, but when one sees the film, it does not feel silly at all. What impressed me a lot was how the actors were dead serious in the film. They were really believable. Naomi Watts as the reporter and Martin Henderson as the film school teacher who at first does not believe the story are perfect for the roles. Its not only the acting, it is also their appearance and chemistry that heighten the scariness of the story. There were also some strong plot differences between the original Ringu and The Ring that made the new version more eerie.
What still amazes me to this day, is that Gore Verbinski directed this film. I mean his previous films did not hint about his skill as a horror director. For me even this mystery adds up to the impact of the film. How someone with no experience in horror films can make a superior horror film for decades to come? That's creepy too!
The final plot twist will stay with the viewer for a long time!

Watched this movie again last night for the first time in years. Absolutely loved it again. I really love the original and the novel but the remake is fantastic too and is how a remake should be done. It makes changes but all serve the fact that it is based in America and it doesn't compromise the original storyline too drastically.
What I love about this version is the atmosphere and cinematography. The blueish tint throughout and the sound affects used truly make for a creepy atmosphere.
I also love how the film works as a mystery. It's intriguing watching the two very likeable leads uncover everything and the end pay-off and twist is the kind of thing that gives you goosebumps. Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson were really good in my opinion and had very believable chemistry.
In most horror movies these days you unfortunately root for the protagonists to bite the dust but not in the Ring.

Agreed, the bluish tint was a really clever choice. The soundtrack is also very well crafted - not very much music and the sound effects are very controlled. That particular, relatively high-pitched yet quiet sound you hear all through the film comes to mind (the one you hear in the video tape when you first see the mother combing her hair in the mirror). Eeesh creepy.

As a badge carrying member of the Remake Police, I should be up in arms over this movie. But it's better than the original, and if you saw this American version first, it very well could be the end viewer's scariest movie ever.

While I disagree that it's the scariest movie ever made, I will agree that it is a quality horror movie, and one of those rare films that's a remake but is better than the original. I can't wait for 'A Cure For Wellness". Gore Verbinski is an amazing director and I've been waiting for a while for him to return to the horror/thriller genre.
