Throughout the week, considering how bizarre the tape was, Katie's friends may have told their other classmates about it and obviously rumours like this would be a popular topic amongst the school. This is probably how Katie's friend knew about it but since Katie has taken time off from school as she is being continually mentally tormented similar to the situation with Aidan and his teacher, she didn't know how widespread the rumour became. As far I can remember, I cannot recall a computer inside Katie's room so you can't assume that Katie knew how widespread the rumour was by checking her social media. As a result of Katie not knowing how widespread the rumour was, she became surprised when even her friend knew about it. So I think this answers your questions but please correct any mistakes I've made.
