i was more angry than sad to i mean yes this movie was sad and the story was sad but idk i was reading about it before i saw it and people said that it was more sad and depressing than requiem for a dream so that made me think that it was going to be overwhelmingly sad i think i gave it to high of expectations as i have every depressing movie since i saw requiem for a dream.

I swear to God if I had seen someone abusing a girl right after watching this I would've beat him to death.
Wow! I had to scroll almost to the bottom of the thread to find someone that felt the way I did. lol
But I was sad as well, this movie brought out the tears for me, knowing that it's based on a real girl didn't help much.

I did. The ending hit me pretty hard, and I really related with how much she missed Volodja. I actually staggered around my house after it ended, crying forcefully until my eyes burned. But that's just me ^_^

(spoiler) I must admit, I'm a "tough" middle-aged bloke with 2 kids about Lilja & Volodya's age, but I had to wipe a tear away when she stood on the bridge at the end I was just thinking "no, please don't, please don't" also the bit when Volodya took all the tablets and was just lying dead in the stairwell so so sad

Yeah that is what really got to me, him lying on the stairwell dead while the old woman told him to get up. I smashed my DVD remote on the floor crying while screaming: He's fu**ing dead you bitch! -

i almost cried at the very end when she died and had a chance (in her heaven) to tell the guy off, help the old woman she was always rude to, and play with her friend i didn't, but i almost did and that's saying enough i guess.

There is absolutely nothing immature about stating the simple fact that it doesnt matter if you cry during the movie or not. The purpose of the movie is to display the reality like it is. Not to make people cry.

I admit, I cried. I only cried at like three other movies and I guess I'll add this one to the list. What did it for me was the scene where after she's had sex with all these men and her body and soul has taken a beating, she decides to build a hut under the coffee table. At the end of the day, all she wanted to do was be under the hut with her only friend, Volodja.

I didn't cry either, but this being the first Russian film so far to my liking says alot, I felt bad for Lilja seeing all those men on top of her,getting used and finally figuring out even with the door open. She doesn't know where to go,or what to do afterwards and like Volodya loss hope from her bleak existence!

I kindof felt the same way. It's a sad story and there were several parts throughout when I felt really disgustedthe scenes with those disgusting old men copulating with her, for oneand in general it's made me think a lot, but I didn't cry and I didn't feel very connected to the film overall.
I think the general development of the story and characters had a big part in my reaction; there were so many parts when I just thought "why?" and no explanation was given, and we never really get to know Lilya as anything besides the victim. There's no psychological development, no empathy.
But that was just my experience.
