Why didn't she tried to escape in better situations?

I thought that maybe she was kind of hopeless or something but she actually did try to escape two times (the one knocking at the apartments door and the one running away from the car).
But why didn't she try to escape while they where shopping? All she had to do is to shout HELP or something.
They also travelled a lot by car. She could have tried to run in a crowded place or something.
Was she afraid of going back to Russia? Was she afraid that they find her and kill her or what? -

It's been a while since I have watched this gem of a movie, so I might be wrong. I think by that time she had been conditioned by her "owner" (makes me sick to even say that) to not trust anyone, including the police. She was most likely suffering from Stockholm Syndrome by that time. She had been beaten and raped several times by that time.
It's so easy for us to wonder why a victim does not do this or that (I am in no way saying it is wrong to wonder about it because I and most others are guilty of this). But until a person is in that situation, he/she would not know what he/she would do.
Some hurt, some love, some shout. I fought the world and I lost that bout.

Tanks for the reply. I think you have a point. Actually, before the shopping scene she cut her hair off and she was a mess. And now that you mention it, maybe learned helpesness was also a factor at that time.

There could be many reasons-
1)She was afraid that the person would really kill her if she tried to escape. A 16 year old who has already suffered so much trauma would easily believe this.
2)She did not know whom to trust or trusted no one at that point as Tracy73 mentioned. Every swede she ever met raped her. Imagine that she is afraid of every other human other than Volodyas angel.
3) Or it can because she did not care. She was convinced that there is no compassion in humans. This is understandable because the people whom she loved most (Except one) deserted her. -

the guy told her if she escapes & goes back to russia, they'll find her & kill her.
& that if she goes to police, police will send her back to russia.
she's a child, she knows nothin about sweden & she's terrified.
in the shopping center she's trying very hard to catch the eyes of one woman a the tail but she completely & consciously ignore her (the most horrible scene imo, as lilya hopes about humanity finish to get smashed by this woman & that's when lilya gives up on life i think).
