Just watched this, I don't know what more I can say that hasn't been said, but I'd have to say its one of the best things I've watched.
I'm looking for similar films, but not just "deep/depressing movies". It was the style, landscapes and brutal realism of Lilja which really drew me to the movie. The perpetually despondent setting in particular. Are there any other films which operate in a similar style with similar settings?
Also, it would be great if someone could tell me the name of the song that is playing in the car when Lilja is being driven by the pimp to her first client in Sweden.

That's pretty much every Scandinavian film ever made but I'd call them depressing though. They have some unwritten rule that they CANNOT show anything remotly positve.

Maybe not Danish films but other Scandinavian films + Icelandic films.

The do tend to be sad but I've seen a good few that were positive.

I recommend 'Show me Love'. Terrific film from Sweden. By the same director too. (Lukas Moodysson)

^That's it. Nevermind the profanity of the original title. If you're looking for the DVD, ask for "Show me Love". If you enjoyed Lilja 4-ever, then you'll probably love this one.

I'd highly recommend 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. Brutally realistic and depressing but very good.

High-five to the guy who suggested All About Lily Chou Chou. Now that I think about it, it's a very comparable movie.

Definitely All About Lily Chou-Chou. I adore that film. Also Dancer In The Dark by Lars von Trier, or Stroszek by Herzog, another film about the poverty-stricken European's infatuation with "the american dream". Also Nobody Knows, a Japanese film about a bunch of (much younger) children abandoned by their mother and having to cope with isolation.
Tomorrow is my birthday.

I was sketchy about dancer in the dark because it was a musical, but my god it's was an amazing movie!
