I mean did he just not want it????? Why didn't he just return it to the store instead of trying to pass it off on everybody? I get it but it is just silly to me. It seems like there should be an explanation behind it

Simple, he was just too lazy to return it to the store. That or he was too cheap/ didn't have the money to actually buy a present.
I gotta admit that I laugh at him trying to give it too Mitch. I like to think that he didn't know that it was from Mitch in the first place but you could interpret the scene as him knowing the whole time and just trying to slip it by him.

It was perfect, I mean think about it, It's a bread maker wedding present that the guy gets stuck with. It's re gifting at it's lamest That was the joke, if you dare re gift be sure you can get away with it. He was using minimal brain cells on that one, as Frank would. You will get it when you get married, some of the gifts are. Interesting. Actually a bread maker is not as bad as some I've seen at all.

I would have loved another scene where he tries to return the bread maker after the divorce.

He was too cheap to buy a thoughtful gift so he just grabbed one of his own wedding presents, unaware that it was from Luke Wilson's character in the first place.
Newly weds often get so many gifts that it takes a while to even open them all, write out the thanks you notes and keep track of who gave what. Their home would have been a mess of gifts he neither knew nor cared came from whomever.
