watch out for spoilers (I don't know how to hide the text like others have done)
I thought this was a brilliant film, I loved the twist as well, the idea of a Sin Eater has been touched upon in several other films briefly, and I find the concept of such a thing to be a very intriguing one.
the church has always been corrupt so the idea of "an other" giving people forgiveness when the church will not so that they can rest peacefully is a brilliant idea, and the fact that it to can be corrupted, and then Alex obviously taking over and deciding to judge those who send for the sin eater is excellent I think it was marketed very poorly, calling it the order was a mistake, Sin Eater was a much better title though it didn't help people to understand what the film was about
I personally love the intrigue and the plot, the way everything happens to Alex to shape him and mould him into a new sin eater, the way nothing is given to the audience on a spoon but the plot is clear and everything that happens is explained well, great film all round for me, couldn't fault it if I wanted to

Agreed. I thought the film was underrated.
Benno Furmman as the Sin Eater was the best part of this film. His screen presence alone makes the film that much more intriguing as Alex begins learning Eden's origins.
I also liked the mythos that there is a dark underworld hidden around the edges of society. The concept of the Black Pope ruling a corrupt version of the Church (redundant I know) and the concept of the various orders within the church I really liked.
I think one of the problems is if people go into this film expecting one type of film and end up finding it to be more of a supernatural thriller/mystery which this film clearly is.
Someone mentioned The Order as being along the same lines as The Ninth Gate or Constantine. I can see their point and agree to that to some extent.
This film is not intended to be a true to life reveal into the Church of Rome. This film is more like the ones mentioned above. -

I thought this film was a little more high brow hence it receiving such a low rating on IMDB. I feel like the movie itself acknowledges this and tries at times to make it more palatable with casual banter. Like someone previously stated ,this movie is an allegory for the Catholic church and their indulgences. The movie was well shot, had a good cast and premise but it does feel like there's something missing.

I saw this film now and I really enjoyed it. Very underrated. Very great acting by Heath in this one. It was really interesting. The theme is very interesting. But one thing bothered me: How did he get into the church with a knife? That was a bit strange. Otherwise it was a very enjoyable film and would see it again.
