Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Ju-on: The Curse

I have seen the Grudge [with S.M.G.], and did find it scary. However, I was utterly dissapointed at the fact that the only real scary part about it was the fact that the movie used loud, sudden music to scare the viewer. I mean, yes, some of the faces
    did
creep me out, but otherwise it wasn't that scary to me.
I don't know what happened to movies where they were just genuinely scary. The movies that didn't only rely on the loud music to make the viewer jump. Movies such as Saw, Nightmare on Elm Street, and House of 1000 Corpses didn't use the element of music to freak me out; those really freaked me out.
I guess I'm off topic, but I guess what I'm asking is: is Ju-On similar to The Grudge, or is it genuinely scary?

If you're talking about Ju-on: The Grudge, the scene with the bedcovers sorta uses the same technique, but other than that, nope.
If you're talking about THIS Ju-on (The Curse), 1 scene does. But the music used in it HIGHLY INTENSIFIES the scene 🙂

One great horror movie I can recommend that seems to be the kind you're looking for, is Noroi, another Japanese film. It's a really creepy, atmospheric movie, doesn't rely much on loud music or anything, though of course it does use some music to convey a sense of dread.
