on IMDB? It was like a combination of politics, soap box, and religion boards. People talked about anything there, but rarely the movie. It was just a place to hang out. emsby, Leon Kennedy, Erika, Marv, and Captain Ameirca are some of the people I remembered.
Captain America wanted to fight me because I said The Godfather was the most overrated movie of all time, LOL.

No, but I can imagine. Were you here for the Troll Wars? It was on the Terminator Salvation boards, iirc. It was nuts. I think most of them migrated over to the expendables boards when it came out. It was a fun place, though.
There's no other movie forums that come close to old imdb boards. I think proper movie discussion died with it, all thanks to the female ghostbusters movie.
ps I posted on the old imdb 10-15 years ago under the monikers 'Danny McGavin' and 'Prequel Dialogue Coach'. I mostly bitched about the star wars prequels.

"I think proper movie discussion died with it"
This is 100% accurate. Conversation is dead. You could see it coming. The last few years of IMDB just turned into what this site, moviehcat, and others are now. It's people more interested in board drama (this site is pretty bad with that) than talking about TV and movies; which is why these sites were created.
I don't know if there was an official exact moment, but if I had to pinpoint it, I'd say the release of The Force Awakens trailer. That brought wave of people from somewhere else. Different people. It wasn't conversation, just mass arguing and trolling; and that's what it's been since.
I'm surprised I don't recognize your name because I lived on the Star Wars boards. Discussing the movies was a favorite way to kill time. I can't stand the prequels, but you could still argue about the movies and it be on topic. The conversation hadn't morphed yet.
I remember people trolling other boards, but not that specific one.

This site has a lot of people who are at the end of their line. I only engage with people who I assume are normal.
The old imdb used to be fine. Then the last few years of it these low lives would crawl out their holes. Found a few on here already. What marks them out is the psychotic rage they fly into when you're challenging their opinion. Absolute dregs of society. A few of them I noticed are younger or come from non-western countries, which might explain a lot.
There's an imdb2, but it's mostly the nerds from the old imdb Film General forum, which was basically an online social club where they all spoke about the same topics and the same movies over and over again. Not a good movie discussion forum.
I'm surprised I don't recognize your name because I lived on the Star Wars boards. Discussing the movies was a favorite way to kill time.
What was your name? I probably mostly posted before you arrived. I was mostly active in the early days, less so later on.
I started a topic called 'Prequel Basher's Sanctuary' where everyone could list what they hated about the prequels. There was a lot of hate for the prequels and it kinda tapped into it, it lasted a few years. It was fun.
I think that's why they closed the boards, they were afraid imdb was a grassroots forum where negative opinion would spread and effect box office. Which is bullshit. For example everyone bashed the prequels but they were the top grossing movies the year they came out. Then the female ghostbusters came out and they blamed it on negative opinions on the internet. And that's what closed the boards, I heard.

This site is weird. It's very gossipy and incestuous. People just yell at each other here at the drop of a hat.
Normal person: "Hey, what did you think of this movie?"
            Response: "Fuck you, ****!"
It's very reminiscent of the end of IMDB. A lot of garbage here.
I think it was a combination of things that killed IMDB. Quite simply, there was a lot of angry losers there (towards the end) who just lashed out. No rhyme or reason, they'd just yell at people and eliminate all possibilities of any conversation. As you put it, you could trash the prequels and it was still about the prequels. I could vehemently disagree with a prequel lover, but it never became hateful or against the purpose of the boards.
I heard the buzz about some directors and studios complaining too. They'd directly reference message boards; and IMDB was THEEE message board for discussing movies and current TV shows.
The people running IMDB just said **** it at a certain point. They didn't feel like managing it anymore. It was out of control and it was never going to go back. Just look at all the off shoots since. It's all just idiocy and anger.

It's bizarre. I think a lot of them are sock accounts who just argue with themselves.

Exactly. I had the same experience. The discussions were always passionate and could get heat but never devolved into absolute rage. It only takes a couple of anti-social ****heads to ruin a forum.
I think you're right, it all got too poisonous in the end.

That makes sense. The films failure had nothing to do with bad scripts/directing, just some people on a forum.
