Wikipedia says the part was just dropped. If they were part way through filming it seems highly unlikely they'd re-cast and re-shoot a bunch of needless footage.

That's terrible. I think von Trier is a genious (after I saw Dogville), but of course that doesn't necessarily say anything about his quality as a human being. But especially considering the moral of his films I mean, how can he criticize human morality and do something like that.
        It's really disappointing.

Yeah, really disappointing. I'm a big admirer of Lars Von Trier but he's really sunk in my estimation after hearing that. There's always been this irritating, attention-grabbing side to him though

I 100% agree good on John C Reilly never does an animal need to be hurt (especially killed) on set furthermore: the fact that it didn't feature in the release demonstrates how it was simply a waste of life, and not needed for 'dramatic purposes' shame shame shame very sad stuff!

After reading this, I'm not going to see this movie. What a sad director.

I'm not going to watch it either. After watching Apocalypse Now I was disgusted with the cow being slaughtered and I was angry at Coppola for filming it. However I discovered that they were filming a real tribe killing the animal for a ritual and that Coppola just filmed it and did not willingly engage the act of violence. Although such imagery should not be filmed, it is disgusting to think that a professional director would cut a living being's life short just to include it in a film. What a waste of life. So pointless, pathetic and unecessarily violent. They could have easily edited it, used sound effects and a fake donkey or even a stuffed donkey for the scene. It's a disgrace. I don't want to see this film now.

As you say, the killing of the cow in Apocalypse was not planned to be in the movie. I think it was Coppola's wife who by chance found the natives performing the ritual and so they filmed it.
This thing with the donkey is another matter altogether. They were going to put it down anyway because it was old and ill, but setting it on fire? That's FUBAR.

In the film, the slaves get so hungry that they killed their donkey for food. "Diabolism" WTF?
