Plus he just graduated. 43K is a lot for someone right out of school. Way more than you need to get a place of your own and a nice/decent car and pay any other bills you might have.

Eh it wasn't terrible back in 05'. I majored in accounting and IT was earned $45K my first year. Depends where he lived. It didn't seem like a major area like California or something either (unless I missed this). If he was living in San Fran and was earning $43K yah, pretty low. Otherwise $43K back in '05 if you were in a good 50% of states could be good money.
Also, if you go through a recruiting agency they will take some of your salary the first year (not directly out of your check but the Company that hires you still has to pay which could affect you a tad if it's a smaller Company).

I think as tipped employees we tend to see everything negatively, but they don't really go into the back story but I assume that in high school they were friends and he was trying to do something nice. He sounds quite sincere when henbsays I just figured you could use it more than me

I have mixed feelings about this scene. I can see him being a bit resentful because the other guy is showing off but at the same time it was a really good tip. I'm sure there are plenty of waiters or waitresses that would just love it making that big of a tip.
I also didn't really feel sorry for him because he explains he was in the same classes as the other guy but didn't apply himself to get the higher education so he could get the better job.

yeah, my feelings are mixed as well. any time i've run into family or old friends that happen to be my waiter I always leave a significantly higher tip than i would leave a waiter i didn't know.
however the "you need this more than i do" comment implies that he was trying to show off his money, and ridicule dean for being a waiter.

I didn't take it that way- I thought he was being genuinely polite.

desite it being a "good" tip, dean actually was realizing he was capable of so much more. it was an insulting tip. an insult because the guy was showing off, feeling sorry for dean, but moreso because anyone who gets happy over a 70 dollar tip needs to reevalute themselves. how rare are those tips? is that really a satisfying career?

I don't really think he was trying to be a dick. Otherwise he wouldn't just give him $100. I mean, making $42K a year doesn't exactly make you rich. It was the final straw for Dean because it made him realize "wtf am I doing?"

I really had no sympathy for Dean in this movie. It was very much a Dante from Clerks situation: a guy who's unhappy with his job but won't do anything to actually fix his situation. Dean has no real prospects, doesn't even look like he wants to try college.
I can't feel too bad for him. He snaps at a customer for leaving him too small of a tip, and then gets upset at another for leaving him too large of a tip. Take it easy, Goldilocks.
So many stories, so little time.
