Yes, exactly. I've mentioned it several times on topics like this. If the restaurants pay the wait staff a decent wage, the restaurant is simply going to get that extra money from the customers by charging them more for the food. So at the end of the day, the people that bitch the most about it are going to be paying that cost anyway.

There should be no tipping what so ever. It only makes workers compete against each other, even though at some places they split the money. And one of the worst things is a boss/employer can see the tip as a form of salary and then pays less in salary.

I live in Canada where minimum wage is $10.25 an hour and nobody can make any less than that, save for minors (under 18 in Canada) who make student wage, which is only a few dollars less. Servers, bartenders, delivery boys and so forth make the same that I do, and I get by just fine. I work customer support, I put up with verbal abuse and systems that don't work everyday, nobody tips me. Even if a customer calls in to compliment an agent they don't get jack.
So yeah, I only tip when I'm pleased with the service is particularly good. Servers shouldn't be nice and keep the customer happy because they think they'll get extra, they should do it because it's their job. Do your job well and you get to keep it, that's how life works for the rest of us, do servers think they're better than all the other work-a-day, minimum wage joes? -

Mst - shouldn't your BOSS be responsible for paying you?
I work at a job that provides service to the public. We don't get tips. We get paid by our employer.
Maybe you should follow your own advice. Maybe you should get a job that has a better salary? Nobody is forcing you to be a waiter. You chose the job. -

So its the customers fault you get crappy salaries? US is the only country that really pulls this crap. No other industry asks the customers to pay the employees. And you arrogant servers getting angry at the customers instead of the owners need to stop the BS. I worked in retail for a little above minimum wage and I had to deliver customers heavy ass washers, dryers, refrigerators. Also lifting bricks, manure, etc into customers cars. And this was in the hot summer and I didn't get a single tip.
