Sorry. I'm just at the end of season 1 on my rewatch. I won't see the movie for a week or two.
Although, from what I heard, it sounds like Milch pulled a Chris Carter when given a chance to resolve his series.

I have no memory of how Deadwood ended since I last watched the series in 2011.
Was underwhelmed. Happy to see Calamity Jane, Wu again. Had only pity for Sweargin. Tim looks 60 instead of 50 but they all looked 20 years older than they were in the old west. I hope he produces a Justified movie next.

Here are my thoughts. I enjoyed it very much. It felt a bit odd at first but after it got going, it just felt like Deadwood. I wished it had been a bit longer as I felt it needed a bit more room to breathe.
There were things I wish had been addressed such as what happened to the Doc’s TB and how and when did Con Stapleton, of all people, become a minster? What happened do Silas Adams?
One thing that felt really out of place was the fate of Harry Manning. When did he start working for Hearst to the point that he would try to murder Seth Bullock? He went a long way from the friendly simple man in the show to someone being shot dead by Jane while attempting to kill his friend.
And my biggest gripe was the ending with Hearst. For the Hearst storyline was finished in the show. It was all the other characters that lacked closure. Here, the movie gives the characters closure but leaves the Hearst story hanging. Hearst is cuffed, nearly beaten to death by a mob of Deadwood citizens and once again dragged by the ear by Bullock to a cell and that’s the last we see of him. Having Hearst get horribly beaten seemed like fan service. As if the audience needed to see him punished in some way.
There is no way Hearst, a sitting US senator and one of the richest, most powerful man in the US is going to let that **** slide. Nor would his revenge against Trixie just go away. Hearst is still very much Hearst and the movie just ends it with him in a cell. He isn’t going to pay for killing Charlie Utter as there is no evidence.
Also, I was surprised my how much Al didn’t influence the plot. He was there throughout but he didn’t do much except give commentary. This was mostly about Seth and Hearst. Either way it was great to see Al again. I’m not sure that Al died at the very end. Most likely as he spent the whole movie slowly dying but if he did, I’m glad he died holding Trixie’s hand and making a joke.
Ser Barristan loves his honor, Grand Maester Pycelle loves his office, and Littlefinger loves Littlefinger.

If he did, he went to the abyss. There he will meet Arlo Givens.

I really dig your take on it.
While I enjoyed it it did not bring closure…or at least the type I was looking for. I suppose it could have been left open ended for the potential of future installments. Milchs condition and actor commitments might make that difficult as well as Al's apparent demise ..but an Emmy nod could go a long way towards proving the viability of continuation. There was meat left on the bone what with Hearst in the cell…but without Al…what would be the point?
I feel Al's limited capacity worked well in showing his peril. It's most powerful when Bullock tells him he will deal with Al later…and Al does not respond…that gutted me! He looked as though he had lost the plot.
I will say that it felt rushed like most elements of the flick.
Something that I feel time constraints hindered was the fleshing out of what happened to characters in the time that has passed. As you mentioned…Doc. did he have the mild form of TB?😂 What happened to Cy???
A few I have some insight on and others just speculation. Harry was always going to turn bad. Milch gave some indication as to where season four would have gone and in it…fire bug Harry Manning was to start the great Deadwood fire only so he could then put it out.
As for Con finding Jesus? I figure that when Cy sent for Con to collect Leon's corpse…Con became enraged and scared and killed Cy. I believe his guilt turned him towards the path of righteousness.
The movie did a great job of bringing back original cast members! Saddly missed were Adams (filming Bosch) Langrishe (filming succession) O'Shaughnessy (would have loved to see him!) Mose Manuel (one of the best character developments for a minor role) Davey (quit a job before you fall a sleep at it😉) Drunk Steve(figures that once he couldn't talk they'd give him the boot😂) The "**** stirrer"(a tragedy to not see him at Tom's joint!) Al's whore after trixy (can't remember her name ..but one truth show itself in the muck…you know she's ****ed for food)
Blazanof (the telegram was mentioned…but I guess Ma Bell reigns supreme in Deadwood now) Tess (Bella Union acting madame…powes boothes daughter …???) Soap with a prize in it guy (would have given a testicle to hear that just one more time!)
Also absent were three members…all of great import to the show…all lost too soon.
Ralph Richeson… Richardson on the show…ended up loving the character once paired with Aunt Lou.
Ricky Jay…Eddie Sawyer on the show…true card sharp and talented actor…the Bella Union's classy atmosphere personafied every time you hear the words "new shooter to the table!"
Powers Boothe…Cy Tolliver on the show.
"Come on in, honey…over here on what the dagos call my 'sinister side.'"
Hard times for the Bella Union…hard times for Deadwood fans. First word out if my mouth when hearing of his passing was…there goes Cy Tolliver.
Loved Powers Boothe since I was a kid…thought his addition to Deadwood was a perfect…and still miss what could have been☹️

It was cool seeing everyone back, but disappointing because it's probably all we'll get. I was also annoyed at how they had those flashbacks of the show for noobs.

I think the flashbacks annoyed me more because I just rewatched the whole series to prep for this.
I also wish they kept the shows opening sequence, but that's a really minor nitpick.
Overall, I'm glad they did it, and I enjoyed it. It works well enough as a conclusion if they never do anything else.
