Did Swearengen get significantly less terrible as the series wore on, or at least between the beginning and end? He was essentially the main antagonist in the first season or so, and then he slowly became allies with many of the protagonists. I do realize circumstances probably dictated much of it, though. Still, quite a dramatic shift. Am I spot on here about this or am I missing something.
But what do I know. I'm just a girl. -

Aye, he definitely took a slow walk towards a different morality throughout the story.
The end of season two when he leaned over the balcony to catch a glimpse of the funeral is one of my favorite moments in the show. He started to actually care about his allies.
Sometimes you need to talk to a rotting human head in a box to break the barrier I guess.. -

I think because at the beginning youre not expecting to like this guy but as the show goes on you see what he's actually acomplished with his methods. And while i do think the stones humbled him a bit, his interactions with Langrishe show that he had a heart before Deadwood.
What ive noticed is this is a town of people that dont really expect much from anyone, they dont expect others to care about them (best demonstrated by Jane) but circumstances bring them together and make them care about each other (sometimes against their will). The bike scene shows this with great measure. -

You don't have to wait until season 3, Jewel was under his protection since season 1. Maybe not so much their interaction as much as her mere presence. He didn't keep her around for her agility.
Nuncle owned you. You're wrong, deal with it. Quit trying to validate your erroneous point. -

That's true but you could also just take it as sympathy for her condition. Langrishe was just such a (slightly) polar opposite you wouldn't believe they were former acquaintances. Like I understand his relationship with Nuttall more than Langrishe.
