They ruined the Jake character in the end.

it was crap that last season that sheen was in as well. They changed alans character from a struggling single father dominated by his mean ex-wife who was bleeding him dry to a perverted cheapskate and mooch, who would steal from people.

The actor playing Jake probably enjoyed making his character look like a fool.
Assuming Jake was a young adult at that point in the series, it's fair to say to many people at his age would be at the most apathetic point in their lives, not really taking care of themselves and making bad choices.
Even though he became a parody of himself, Jake is still the more believable person on the show. Alan on the other hand… the man became a lunatic!

As has been said, that show tanked when Kutcher replaced Sheen. It was unwatchable, well, more unwatchable than it was with Sheen.
I think the fat kid Jake did the smart thing as a teen and lost weight. Those were his teen idol years when he could score with groupies.
