Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Mysterious Skin

    Gracelovesmovies — 10 years ago(November 07, 2015 04:07 AM)

I just finished watching this movie because I saw it on a kpop article - and now that I know the full context of the cereal scene, I am so angry!
IU is a famous pop singer in Korea, and her newest music video has all those Alice in Wonderland dissociation elements, coupled with other grooming elements (which you can see more of in the link at the bottom) [These articles were triggered by her comments calling another abused child character "Zeze" of My Sweet Orange Tree sexy, so you know she's not quite right in the mind.]
In one scene she's pouring cereal over herself. Which would be weird enough on its own but could be dismissed without all the other Lolita references, including her, a 23 year old, drinking milk from a baby's bottle and then then pouring said milk over a barbie doll. After the cereal pouring bit she also grabs a table cloth and wraps herself with it like a baby - I might be reaching here, but it made me think of the bit in Mysterious Skin where Neil is asking the coach "can we wrap ourselves up in blankets like we did last time?" Can it really be a coincidence?
I thought I'd share this because I got so enraged; it's disgusting how people, in particular celebrities, often sexualise books and movies about child abuse - e.g. Marilyn Manson's Heart Shaped Glasses. IU may be a grown woman, but she as a very young face and often tries to look even younger with pigtails and schoolgirl outfits Am I just being too sensitive or is anyone else as disgusted as I am?
I'm a bit worried and disturbed for her as well, since I think sometimes people turn to this sort of infantile sexualisation when they themselves have been abused.

Never associate with anyone who thinks this movie is erotic or that Lolita is a love story.

Absolutely nobody thinks that this movie is sexy other than pedophiles, and you shouldn't be talking to pedophiles anyways (unless, of course, you're delivering a snappy line to them before you shove them into a woodchipper feet-first).
