For me it is the greatest.
I thought it would be topped by now, TDK and TDKR, MoS and BvS all looked like they had potential to, but none of them did for me.

I love this movie so much, I think it's flawless, yet it is my 3rd favorite of the trilogy. When I first saw it I didn't even think that it was possible to do something better and then The Dark Knight came and it became not only my new favorite Batman movie, but my favorite movie ever. And even though I love The Dark Knight Rises very much, Batman Begins is only a close 3rd. Maybe it'd be a #2 in time, but I kinda doubt it. Still, a masterpiece.

What does it matter how much money a huge corporation makes? Besides, it didn't make as much as you thought it should purely because the last time people saw Batman at the cinema, George Clooney was prancing about making a fool out of the character.
Regardless of whether you're a comic book fan (I'm not) or an action movie fan (again, I'm generally not) - this is hands down one of the most mesmerising movies of all time. Sends shivers down my spine just thinking about watching it. Incredible.

I think people care about box office because they wanted more people to see it. But it did extremely well on home video anyway.
And you're right, it's such a well constructed movie, and it's told with such authenticity. Mark Kermode calls it an arthouse movie with a budget.
