Keeping track of everyone by tally marks? Good job there, guys.

Just some random dude in the Carribean with a boat and a few reefers. Bigger boats are called "cattle boats" because as a diver you're just cattle. Though it'd be unusual to be in an open water dive out of sight of land, I wouldn't count on the boat staff for my safety.

It's indeed pretty beep but considering it happened in real life not too far fetched.
If the woman in the story had simply been responsible and relayed to the guy that two divers were going back in, the situation never would have happened.
What the mix up was in real life was in not sure.

The guy marking the sheet must have been a bit daft. We see him marking off 7 and 8 and there would have been only 6 people on the boat. Surely a quick look around would tell him that there were only 6 people there and not 8.
I would have thought that a list of names would be a more reliable way to track who was there and who wasn't.
Also, diving out of sight of land isn't that rare. I did a dive off the coast of North Queensland on the Great Barrier Reef some years back. We went out to the outer reef on the edge of the continental shelf. I'm pretty sure we were out of sight of land.
When I said I wanted to be a comedian, they all laughed at me. Well, they're not laughing now!

Or even just each say a number as they go around the circle. Eventually, they get to 18, and realize they're missing a couple divers.

it's obvious he needed a head count and a list of names, but he was stupid

or that stupid who forgot his mask (who was complaining of HIS mistake).
It is scary to think that when it comes down to it, they really did rely on tally marks. I hope the families sued the hell out of that company

that's the point, if he had made a roll call the film wouldn't have had any story
