It's so funny reading all these stupid comments from people saying "If no one survived then how do we know what happened? Please don't say its based on a true story when it's not"
    Morons
Two people really got stranded and where never found, that's the true story. No one knows what really happened as it was two days after they were stranded when someone noticed.
And this is a film about that story.
Obviously the film makers are going to make their own story to shoot, BASED not real footage of what happened.
Try and shoot me down if you want complainers, but you can't really as what I've said is correct.
(I don't argue with people over the internet, what's the point?)

I hear ya. People take the "Based on a True Story" tag a little to rigidly. The official definition for "based" is: "Have as the foundation for (something); use as a point from which (something) can develop". Meaning: anything after that initial foundation can be up for various degrees of creative license. The true story in this case was that a real couple was lost at sea never to be found again after being forgotten on a diving trip. Obviously we'll never know what the real people actually discussed (or how they eventually died, for that matter)but my favorite part about the movie was how it was able to capture a sense of realism in that situation. I thought the screenwriter did a great job coming up with realistic dialogue given the character's circumstances.

Remind me never to use that dive boat company.
That was some oversight. I guess a passenger manifest was too First World for this operator. This is why we are careful with whom we put in care of our lives.
Really sad story. Sadly, not uncommon.

I believe the couple's dive equipment was eventually found, and there was no apparent evidence of a shark attack. They are thought to have died of dehydration. One of the items found was a dive chalkboard, in which they had scribbled something to the effect of their name, that they were left behind and need help, etc.
Regardless, it's a creepy story that leaves a lot to the imagination in what they must have endured before succumbing. That is what the movie fills in.
Similarly, the movie "the reef" (which has far more action in it than this does) was loosely based on a similar story. That story was relayedby the sole ssurvivor.
