Was the fact that basically none of the soldiers had their helmets buckled,even in combat where there is a great chance of loosing it. Was this common practice?
Also why is tom hanks listed as narrator? I haven't heard him narrate a thing at all in any episode. -

Yes he does. He narrates all of the intros to every epidode where they show real WWII footage.

There was scuttlebutt that one or more Marines or soldiers had had their heads blown off by explosions that caught the fighting man's helmet in the concussive force.
As well, the steel helmet became an excellent secondary tool or contrivance. More than one U.S. fighting man drank coffee or water from his helmet, warmed soups and stews in them, or dug for his life with his helmet during mortar or artillery attacks. After any of that, you wouldn't want the filthy grime of your own lack of showers or hygiene dangling in your stew.
