Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Black Dahlia

Okay Scarface was cool and it is okay to rip off a scene or two. But you have to have a film that makes sense, not cop some fake noir attitude. It also didn't help that both Johannson and Hartnet blow too.
What are they doing? Why do they come here?
Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.

I found your comment really insightful. It's refreshing to finally see an IMDB user who takes the time and care to explain their completely misinformed and feeble-minded opinions about film. I also like your use of the word "attitudee."

        Oh puhleeze,
this film got panned by almost every critic as well as it was a box office flop. De Palma represents everything that is wrong with Hollywood with his excesses wrapped around a bad idea to begin with. Who are you, one of his relatives? Go play grammar Nazi somewhere else.

Yes, he is my father. And there was no grammar correction in my comment. If I want to play grammar Nazi, I will tell you that "Black Dahlia" is a "film," not a "filmed." My response to your post was more about you having absolutely no supporting evidence behind your claim that his work "blows." Please provide us with some reasons why he "blows." I'm interested in hearing them. P.S. Just because critics pan a film is no reason not to form your own opinion about it. To use your own words, that's "what is wrong with Hollywood."

Who said I was being objective? I simply didn't like the film & it seemed like a real pointless mess. Jeez, yeah, in the end it is my opinion

The true story of "The Black Dahlia" is such an intriguing murder mystery, yet this movie concentrates on everything, but the murder. U-verse gave this movie two stars. Half a star would have been generous and only because Josh Hartnett, Mia Kershner and Mike Starr managed to give their characters some emotion. Hillary Swank was just awful. Scarlett Johansson, as she does with most of her roles, is always frowning with this questioning look on her face, as if to say, "what is my motivation" or "how am I supposed to react to what the other actor just said"? Aaron Eckhart, who I usually like, explodes with anger in two scenes, for no apparent reason. Let's not forget honoring the memory of Lee, (Kay's live-in boyfriend and Bucky's partner), with dinner at Kay's, which ends up with Bucky pulling the tablecloth off the dinner table so he and Kay can have sex on it. Such a touching tribute. I am not even sure why they bothered including any reference to "The Black Dahlia" in this mess of a movie. Just terrible.
                  "Don't "yeah,yeah" me, Lois."

I certainly agree with the previous posters who find De Palma leaves much to be desired. I also hated his indulgence of Al Pacino's gross overacting in Scarface.
Only two things are actually knowable:
It is now and you are here. All else is merely a belief.

So true! Before Scarface, Pacino was a pretty under control minimalist sort of actor. But after that movie he always had at least one scene where he went overboard with some Tony Montana like excess.

Hey I agree I don't really even care if the people die in this movie. It would be better if the entire cast did after allowing this piece of poop to flop out.

Lol, the whole cast and crew should have been liquidated for this atrocity

DePalma sucks but Scarface was cool? How goddamn stupid are you? You must be close to the top of the list of stupid people that's for sure. Brian DePalma is a master and Scarlett Johansson is the most beautiful actress working.
When I want your opinion I'll be sure to ask. Until then keep your stupidity to yourself.

BTW, you low brow cretin, opinions are opinions, they don't get rated like facts. Since I don't like Scarlett and don't think she is that beautiful, I don't feel obligated to fake respect for her because some jerk like you gets a woody over her body.
