I am a sucker for tragic love stories. If a love story has a happy ending, I am uninterested. BBM wasn’t a super special movie or anything, but considering many of the nominees and winners I’ve seen in the years since, I’d say it’s nomination was deserved. In 2010 the hurt locker won best pic ffs… and in the same year Precious and Avatar were nominated for best pic. None of those movies were better, really, than BBM. Crash was not better than BBM either. I would say Brokeback was actually better. Capote should have won best pic.
It's been several years since I've seen these movies. My recollection of them is vague.
Now, Hurt Locker beat the competition in the category of Best Picture for a couple of main reasons imo. Mainly for Identity politics (first female director Oscar win) and it represents best film better than the other nominees. It's what the Academy normally chooses for best picture. The other nominees were all great films in their own way and rightfully so.. We'll always remember them whether we actually enjoyed watching or take this subject seriously.
Personally, I rooted for James Cameron's Avatar as best film because I felt he deserved it. The story, plot and overall themes in Avatar weren't particularly unique like Broke Back Mountain and not even compared with Hurt Locker. The genre Avatar represents isn't historically taken seriously by the Oscars and I feel rather under-represented in the Best Picture category probably in another major categories as well.
With all of that going against James Cameron, I felt Avatar deserved to win especially considering the judges were already influenced to thinking outside the "box". Lol
I like war films but Hurt Locker wasn't the best I've seen, yet it does represent a testimony that female directors what it takes to stand alongside their male counterparts with an equally well craft product. Katherine Bigelow made her mark that night and in hindsight, I'm happy she did. It's not like I didn't think she deserved the win. I just really liked Avatar alot. -

I guess it depends how you look at it. If you can’t get over the “novelty” of gay cowboys, and this gives it a sort of schlock factor for you, then you won’t be able to take it seriously. If you look at it as any sort of gay movie, first and foremost, then it will have a soap opera factor. It never had any sort of schlock factor or “omg gay” factor for me. I avoided it for years but when I watched it, I saw it as a romantic tragedy sort of film with a universality to it. It’s so sad it’s almost too much.
Well said. -

I just can't get into a movie about 2 homosexual men,I don't like tragic love stories no matter the sexuality, it is what it is.
Mechanic, you're a homophobe. Gay people can "get into" a story about a man and a woman without puking. Sorry, I ain't buying it. Bigotry rears its ugly head again.

I’m not a homophobe ,I’ve got lots of gay friends,I’m can’t get into any tragic love story .I don’t hate gays ,only if they are assholes ,I hate all assholes. I’ve had guys I’ve known for years that were friends that I thought were straight ,come out and ask me out and of course I’ve said no thanks ,and we still chat .Love stories are not my bag and yes I’ll admit watching a love story about 2 gay mails to be awkward .

“I can’t be bigoted because I have lots of friends who are ___”
First off there is no way you have any friends. Secondly that is the stupidest counterpoint anyone can make when being called out for being bigoted. Motherfucker you are a homophobe. Accept it ******.
