You could see in her eyes She knew about them, she knew about the shirts and she knew Ennis would find them. The actress did such a great job at conveying so much emotion with her face.

      Hello,
Yes, I agree with you about Jack's mother, I've always believed that Mrs Twist knew how important Ennis was to her son. For me I rate as amongst the best scenes, the moment when she put her hand on Ennis's shoulder and told him he could go up to Jack's bedroom, "if you want to". Deeply moving, and significant!
      Best Wishes

        Hi, Sam:
Don't forget one little thing in that scene: when Jack's mother gently pushes Ennis as she's touching his shoulder. She was being more than encouraging about Ennis going up to Jack's roomshe wanted him to go up there.

          Hi Ron,
Yes your correct, Mrs Twist WANTED Ennis to find those shirts.
          An altogether heart stopping scene.
          Best Wishes

The father knew, also. He just didn't accept it.

I want to echo everyone's sentiments here - Roberta Maxwell as Jack's mother was absolutely amazing to convey such emotion with almost no words. What a gem she is and a great actress.

Yes, that was a powerful scene. Jack's mother seemed like a shy, timid lady, but the expression in her eyes said it all. And I think Ennis understood what she was trying to convey.
I'm sure she dared not say a word to set off that hateful old husband of hers.unless he was just acting that way because he didn't like Ennis.
